I'm still on the old Dell my mom used to use, but wow...Wow. Somewhere, a Geek Squad member is sobbing in agony over this laptop.
I want to be able to access the settings, like the night light function. The settings will not open beyond the first menu. You try to access these functions directly and it just freezes on loading the settings window.
This is seemingly because of corrupt files, so I give the laptop what was probably the first sfc /scannow it's had in its life. While this always worked on my past and current laptops, it does not work on this one because system files are corrupted. Microsoft says the way to fix this is to run a DISM command.
The DISM command also doesn't work, because of, you guessed it, corrupted system files.
I try the .NET Fx repair tool. The .NET Fx repair tool ALSO doesn't work because of corrupted system files.
What I decide is needed is a fresh Windows 10 install to get rid of the corrupted system files once and for all. GUESS WHAT STOPPED THE FRESH WINDOWS 10 INSTALL FROM WORKING?
EVERY SINGLE FIX POSSIBLE IS THWARTED BY MORE CORRUPTED SYSTEM FILES.
My parents give me shit about the way I "abused" my old Dell Inspiron until it could barely even boot without crashing, but I think it was Kaspersky that did most of the damage on that one. At least mine didn't have so many fucking corrupted system files that I couldn't even perform SFC scans. How do you do this? I know Mom never let this laptop power all the way down, ever, but there had to be more she was doing with it that got it this bad. It's amazing Geek Squad was even able to get the files off the hard drive when she switched to her current one. That process could have been thwarted by corrupted files, too.

Make a windows 10 usb and install it that way, nuke the drive. Dell might have an image for that laptop if you want all their bloatware.
