(And i'm going to preface this with the fact that I *do* get it, but I'm just pissed.)
55+ apartments. Who lives in them? People over 55 (stay with me here).
Most people I know over 55, or even over 65, are as close to retirement as is realistically possible in the USA, and in good old 'Murica that means that they're usually pulling disability. Now, the average amount paid out --to people that I interact with regularly in any case-- is ~$1100/month if you're a "Gold Star" retiree. For a couple people I know, that isn't the case, but i'm getting away from the point.
$1100 isn't a lot to begin with, and to seniors (and disabled folks) who rent, that whole amount gets eaten up just to keep a roof over your head. They might start looking for a new place to live that is more suited to their needs --more accessible, quieter, and with other people they have common interests with, right?
And look! An advertisement for an unassisted Senior Living community! And they even allow pets, so you don't have to give your companion to a shelter, hooray!
The cozy* one bedroom with a roll in shower is going for $1250, partial utilities, a pet rent of $75/month, first/last/deposit, and a non-refundable application fee of $45.
.... WHAT THE FUCK???
I KNOW THEY KNOW WHO THEIR DEMOGRAPHIC IS!!!
The only senior I know that can afford something like that is my dad, and that's only because he's a lying, conniving shit-weasel.
(And before you mention subsidized housing, those waitlists are about ten years long. People will die before their number comes up.)
Sure, there are seniors that get SSI and SSDI and pull either from a pension or a IRA. Maybe they have a few juicy investments, too, to pad out the bank account, however, that is not the case for a lot of people and this money-grubbing, gatekeeping BULLSHIT just PISSES ME OFF!!
Ugh...
....So anyway, today I've been looking for apartments that my mother-in-law can afford.Β
