Saturday evening, I believe, I was debating whether or not to buy myself a ticket for Death Note the musical. It was cheap, the coach would be cheap, the only thing holding me back was myself.
In typical me fashion, I placed my decision in chance's hands. I messaged my mum, asking if she had anything planned for us that day - if she answered and said no, I'd book them, any other outcome and I wouldn't.
Not only did she reply, she said she would pay for my ticket on the condition that I brought my brother with me. I immediately broke the news to my brother, to which he responded with complete and utter excitement.
Flash forward to Tuesday, the day of the show. We get the coach to London. All is well. I check the underground to make sure there are no issues... CENTRAL LINE SEVERE DELAYS
Oh dear.
We take another route to avoid it.
So did everyone else.
The carriage is cramped. It's my brother's first time on the tube. We're crushed between a tall man's armpit and a short man's head. My brother is giggling out of awkwardness. I'm red in the face from the heat.
We get off. It's time to grab food. Buying food is easy; there isn't a seating area, but we find a quiet spot on the floor indoors. From here, we make our way to the venue. London is tall and busy, we both agree we'd never want to live here, but can appreciate its architecture.
We get to the venue: it's beautiful. The complex is a huge set of brutalist buildings that I could spend hours exploring if given the chance. First of all, I spot the Misa cosplayer I always see on tik tok but got too overwhelmed by the crowd to catch up with her, so, unfortunately, I didn't get to meet her.
I go to the welcome desk to ask where I show my tickets but the woman at the front desk is so nonchalant that I could barely make out what she was saying and filled in the blanks (which worked).
We got to the door before our seats and my brother, overly excited for the show, rushed past the usher I was talking to, and tries to open it. She told us we had to wait until the doors were open. My brother was dying of embarrassment.
The show was amazing. I'd absolutely see it again, it was genuinely magical.
Afterwards, we want to go get stuff signed by the cast. We make our way to the stage door and wait in excitement. There aren't many people stood around; we assume it's because not many people know you can do this.
10 minutes pass.
20 minutes pass. People we don't recognise walk out the door. We realise the crowd is people waiting for others inside.
We are now alone.
Finally, some ensemble come out. They sign our books and share their excitement for the show.
We wait some more. We have to leave in 10 minutes to catch the tube back to our coach. If we miss it, we have 5 minutes between getting off the tube and our coach leaving.
Telly, the actor for Ryuk, comes out. He looks up at us in bewilderment and asks if we'd like a signature. Then, he says "you got tickets for opening night!!"
Opening night?
"Yeah!" I respond with uncertainty masked by enthusiasm.
"Sorry I'm so late out, we're having a party. We usually come out earlier than this."
He runs off.
3 minutes.
I want another signature. My brother is anxious.
I decide to be the responsible older sibling and leave. Just before we turn away, two women walk up to us.
"Did you see Dan and Phil?!"
"No??!! They were here???"
One of the women fangirls out at us about meeting them. I'm reeling from excitement and also the fact that we need to leave. I try to tell myself this is divine intervention and the rest of the cast were about to burst through the stage doors.
Nothing.
I tell them it was lovely to meet them but we needed to run. My brother and I run in the general direction google maps tells us to. Top tip: do not listen to google maps. We get lost, I start trying to find our way there using the few signposts. We make it to the station 4 minutes late.
We sit waiting for the next tube. The final tube. My brother is panicking which annoys me but I have to pretend to be unbothered. The tube arrives, we board it, everything is running smoothly. At some point I had lost my water bottle, which I was pretty bummed about, but it wasn't the end of the world.
We get to our stop with a bit of time to spare. My brother keeps running off and it's starting to get on my nerves.
We arrive at the coach station 15 minutes before departure. The coach we think is ours drives off.
"Are you sure you're in the right station?" Says a man sat on a bench in the dark.
Oh.
We run. Our coach leaves in 5 minutes. It's 11:25pm and we're in Central London. Thankfully, the right station is only across the road.
I read the sign for directions, my brother continuing to run off. I shout at him. We make it to the coach spit as the driver makes his final call. "You can't just stand around and wait for it to pick you up"
I laugh through gritted teeth. He doesn't know. It isn't on him.
We sit down. I realise my phone is on 20% and dropping fast, I still need it for the taxi home. There are no charging ports on the bus. I power my phone off and pray.
Our coachmates are typical coachmates: loud, annoying, adjusting their positions whilst using my chair as a handle. Typical behaviour.
Three hours of trying not to fall asleep pass. We make it back to our hometown. I call a taxi, we get in, the guy drives us home.
"Have a great night, girls"
Girls?
My brother looks at me with nothing but confusion. Is this guy ok?
Anyways, we made it home safe. Somehow.
Today, I discover what Telly was on about. Somehow, I had booked tickets for their first official showing; the shows before were just preview showings. Not only were Dan and Phil there, but so were a bunch of other celebrities. But of course, I didn't know, so didn't see any.
On a positive note: I loved the show so much, it was worth all the struggles. I'd go through most of it again to see it once more.
