Remember when everyone played the 3DS version on full blast, then forgot about it a week ago? I was one of those people. Now I think it's time to do it all again.
This is gonna be sweet!
Backstory
For anybody who is unaware, Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream is the sequel to Tomodachi Life, which came out on Switch 1 earlier this year. Tomodachi Life (as a series, which is sometimes globally referred to as "The Tomodachi Collection" due to it's origins) is known to be a very good game for people who love character making, due to you being able to create not only your friends and family, but also your original characters if you can be creative enough.
While the original 3DS version let you do this with a pretty basic (but fine) rendition of the Mii Maker, Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream multiplies the customization by at least tenfold, and allows you to paint on people's faces. This said painting allows you to make furries a little more accurately.
I think you can see where this is going. Let's talk about me, however.
Two of my favorite creators, Vylet Pony and NomNomNami, may be two unrelated figures, and they kind of are. But one thing that makes them relevant, is that they have both become obsessed with Tomodachi Life a while back. Vylet Pony has posted YouTube videos about this, and NomNomNami roleplays has one of her own characters on it while posting about it. Both creators have done some great work with their tools, with Vylet obsessing over Aria and Wolf (my favorite fictional duo), and Nami having some extensive, non-canon lore built up.
And I wanted to do that, too. And here we are.
First, let's quickly rewind a little and give out some backstory!
The Nintendo Switch is a relatively new console, with some pretty experimental emulation right now. While it does work, it kind of sucks. For example, it seems much better of an idea to run the game with Ryujinx rather than Yuzu, which was a mistake I had made. A yuzu fork I was using happened to cause crashes for fun, so I switched to a Ryujinx fork, and that seems to be the recommended consensus.
But even before I actually tried this, I had much worse hardware than I do now. And with the problems I was having, I thought it would be hard to run. But then I give it a shot, and lo and behold, the workload is sort of on par with some Unreal Engine 4 games I play. So it ended up not being that bad in the end!
But of course, I can't say anything about my original hardware. So for now, we'll just play like this and see how it goes!
I did it anyway
That was far from the only concern, though. There was also the setup, which I was also concerned was going to suck. Guides mentioning you need to install firmware, decryption keys, get the game from a source which seemingly was hard to find, then install a mod for 60fps... It seemed quite overwhelming and-
I did it in 10 minutes. The only thing was that I tried using Lossless Scaling for 60fps instead of using the mod, as I updated the game to 1.0.3, and apparently the 60fps patch only goes up to 1.0.2. Whoops?
I did have to switch from Yuzu to Ryujinx (as mentioned before), but other than that, we are currently smooth sailing! Not many problems, not much lost. I was quite bummed to find a controller was required (unlike the original 3DS game being almost entirely playable with JUST the touchscreen), but no big deal! I play with a controller now, easily solved.
So, what is the end result, exactly?
...and I'm addicted!
Addiction. No really, I had played it late into the day, and I really wanted to continue at 12 in the morning. This stuff gets addictive.
Tomodachi Life is a very fun game to me, because it's like a character creator. It almost replaces what ROBLOX took away from me, and I can have fun doing very stupid stuff, such as humiliating a self-created Discord Moderator and trying to make friends meet my characters. If you have the right mind, you can create silly scenarios and write about it like it's an alternative universe. Especially fun for writers!
And that's why its kind of exciting to me, because its something new. It's cool, it's something others can like, and it might give you an especially fun talking point on your first conversation with a new friend! Which makes it very appealling.
I do also have to set it up with some friends, so hopefully that will get figured out soon... I still need to learn how to send a Mii to somebody else, because I know a few friends that would LOVE to have me.
We'll see how it works. On the 3DS version, you had to take a picture then do some fuckery to scan it with the fake camera... Maybe this will be improved, and you can import codes instead! We'll see. If this is very popular, I'll do follow-ups!
The Lore of the island (so far)
Oh, silly me, how could I forget! Let's talk about the lore of my little island.
I've only been playing for about two days and have just been trying to be funny. However, it does open the door for more fun happenings! So let's see how things are going so far, on our little island...
Trolling is a valid sport now
First things first, Trolling is a real, competitive sport. And several of my friends really love to troll. My brazilian friend and my girlfriend especially apparently planned a hangout to Troll together..? I guess?
I had been asked for a sport, and thought I was going to put Gaming there. But I ended up putting Gaming for something else (I think for a hobby? Something I like to do? I can't remember the prompt), so for sport, Trolling became a sport, because I thought it would be a funny idea for Trolling to be a sort of memey thing where people do it like it's competitive e-sports, you know?
I put Trolling there, as it was something I used to do a long time ago. I've since given up on it in pursuit for more mature hobbies and interests, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to preserve it... and I think I made a man created horror out of it.
Oh boy, Trolling is permanently Lingo on my island. Fun!
Gaming is popular with almost everyone
Speaking of, Gaming is also very popular! This is quite expected as I like to game myself and added many of my friends who do, but I think its funny that gaming has been the thing that brought people together on my Island!
Normally, I start becoming friends with people by throwing many topics at the wall, to see what can stick as conversation starters. For example, playing Left 4 Dead some time might not stick, neither would music reviewing (or my favorite feelings towards a Particular story album), but maybe talking about creating music would.
Yet in this little universe, some little fellas meet because me, a hand in the sky puts two people in a room together, they say "You like gaming too! Let's be friends!!", "ok", and then progressions magically happen. Something that is far from realistic.
Though, Nothing in general makes senses about this world
My friends have met my OCs
This is my favorite part, but I can make my friends meet my characters. I wanna put the furry and the girlfriend together? Done. Wanna place the brazilian with a soccer fanatic? You betcha. Placing a trans girlie with a fellow trans girlie? Now, now we are talking business.
I have yet to add all of my characters (I've been pretty lazy), but so far, I have about 3 of them. Two of them have met my girlfriend, and that's about it. But we will surely work on that soon!
Other misc stuff
Let's rapid fire some extra stuff before I let you go.
For example, I said I wanted to bring my girlfriend onto an island with me, so that became part of the Lingo. Same thing with a random obscure game box I put for fun.
My girlfriend also liked getting a box of tissues, for some reason. To the point of gathering me and our mutual friend over to a corner to discuss it as a group? For some reason?
Weed is now also a food, and I love giving it to everybody I can find for no reason. I made a strange looking mint as a treasure. I saw that Vylet made an "I'm Creekflow" record once, I wanna do that but with Monarch of Monsters!
OC Shenanigans
Before we finish, just some rapid fire OC stuff!
Firstly, one of my trans girlies is obsessed with a tree branch I gave her. She really liked the gift, and showed her sister, for some reason. She also really vibes with her sister, as of right now. Her sister also spaced out and fell asleep at the fountain, at 11 in the morning.
Additionally, one of my tough OCs is friends with one of my softer trans women OCs, which is... interesting, to say the least, but I don't judge. I am the one that did it.
We'll see how things develop further!
