I almost didn’t write another one of these because nothing huge happened last night, and honestly I’m starting to feel a little ridiculous documenting every weird noise I hear outside. 😂 But there was one thing that bothered me enough that I figured I’d write it down anyway.
After the tapping on my kitchen window the night before, I was expecting myself to be paranoid as hell when I took my dog outside again. Surprisingly, I wasn’t.
I remembered my phone this time, by the way. 😂 I had my flashlight like always, my phone in my pocket, and my dog’s retractable leash. I was prepared for absolutely nothing to happen now that I actually had a way to record it.
And that’s pretty much exactly what happened.
It was dark as hell outside, but that’s normal here. The light by the dumpster was on, and once we got farther away from it I used my flashlight. My dog wandered around doing his normal sniffing routine while I kept looking toward the corn.
Nothing moved.
I didn’t hear any crunching either.
For once, the cornfield was just a cornfield.
I actually started feeling a lot better about everything. Two weird nights don’t necessarily mean anything. We live outside city limits. There are animals everywhere, and when it’s that dark and quiet, every little sound seems ten times louder than it probably is.
My dog wasn’t acting weird either. He wasn’t stopping or looking behind us. He wasn’t staring into the corn. He was just being himself.
We stayed outside for a little while, and eventually I started heading back toward the apartment.
That’s when he stopped.
I immediately looked toward the corn because apparently that’s just what I do now. 😂
Nothing.
Then I realized he wasn’t looking at the field.
He was looking at my apartment.
More specifically, toward the back side of the building where my bedroom and kitchen windows are.
At first I didn’t think anything of it. I figured he probably heard something inside. Maybe something shifted, maybe he heard a noise through the window, who knows.
I gave his leash a little tug and told him to come on.
He didn’t move.
He just stood there staring at the building.
I shined my flashlight toward the apartment even though there really wasn’t anything to see. Just the outside wall and the windows.
I couldn’t see anything unusual.
I called him again and this time he finally came with me, but he kept turning his head back toward the building while we walked.
That was weird, but still not exactly terrifying.
We went inside, I locked the door, and everything was fine.
For probably an hour or two I didn’t think about it again. I was in my bedroom messing around on my phone when my dog suddenly lifted his head.
You know how dogs do that when they hear something?
He didn’t bark. He just picked his head up really fast and looked toward the bedroom window.
I stopped what I was doing and listened.
Nothing.
I waited a few seconds, and he eventually put his head back down.
I figured somebody outside probably shut a car door or something. There are other people living here. Not every noise is about my creepy fucking cornfield. 😂
Maybe ten minutes later he did it again.
This time he got up.
He walked over toward the window and stood underneath it looking up.
I asked him what he heard, obviously expecting my dog to suddenly learn English and explain the situation to me.
He just stared at the window.
The curtain was closed.
After what happened in the kitchen the night before, I really didn’t feel like opening another curtain and staring outside into complete darkness.
So I didn’t.
For once in my life I made the smart horror movie decision. 😂
I called him back over to me, and after a minute he finally came.
Everything was quiet again.
I kept scrolling on my phone, but now I was paying attention to every little sound in the apartment. The refrigerator kicking on sounded suspicious. The building settling sounded suspicious. My dog scratching himself probably would’ve sounded suspicious at that point.
Eventually I told myself I was being ridiculous.
Then I heard something outside.
It wasn’t tapping this time.
It sounded like something brushing against the side of the building.
That’s the best way I can explain it.
Not scratching. Not banging. Just this quick dragging sound against the outside wall somewhere near my bedroom window.
My dog heard it too because his head immediately went back up.
I sat there listening.
Nothing else happened.
I grabbed my flashlight and finally went over to the window.
I didn’t open the curtain right away. I stood there for a few seconds because I was suddenly very aware that if something actually WAS outside, I was about to move the only thing preventing me from seeing it.
Which also meant it could see me.
That thought wasn’t fucking helpful. 😂
I turned my bedroom light off first so I wouldn’t basically put myself on display and then moved the curtain just enough to look outside.
I couldn’t see anything.
I used my flashlight and checked the grass directly underneath the window. Then I moved it farther out toward the corn.
Nothing.
I was honestly relieved.
I closed the curtain, turned the light back on and told my dog, “See? Nothing.”
He apparently disagreed because he kept staring at the window.
I eventually got tired of watching him watch it, so I distracted him and tried to forget about the whole thing.
Nothing else happened for the rest of the night.
This morning I checked outside again.
There wasn’t anything underneath the window. No footprints that I could see, nothing broken, nothing that looked like something had been messing around out there.
So once again, probably an animal.
But here’s the part I can’t stop thinking about.
When we were outside last night, my dog started staring at my apartment before we ever went back inside.
At the time I assumed he heard something inside the building.
Except I was the only one in my apartment.
And whatever he was staring toward was the same side of the apartment where my bedroom window is.
The same window he wouldn’t stop staring at later.
I’m sure there’s an explanation for that too.
I just haven’t figured out what the fuck it is yet.
