IDYLLS - Prayer for Terrene | Record Review #003

I've kind of fallen out of love with metal recently. A lot of modern metal just feels... sanitized? With all these perfect amp modelers and digital touchups, I feel like a lot of the energy behind the scenes has been replaced with polished take after take to get the best possible sound. The thing is that for me, I've never wanted metal to sound perfect. I want it raw, abrasive, and like it's ready to kill you at any moment- just what Prayer for Terrene offers.

This record is rough, brutal, and all around disgusting to the ear. No part of this is compromising to the median listener, and it receives personality in spades because of it. The punishing noise of opener Lied To should be enough to steer anyone not interested in this sound away- but sink its teeth into those who get it. Once it starts, this record fires on practically every single cylinder it can. This is a mathcore album, but don't get it twisted- this isn't an over the top flashy display of tech skills- it's a gruesome display of noise riddled paths of utter destruction.

The band isn't afraid to detour as well, with Pcp Crazy starting with a hoedown pastiche before swiftly transitioning into a hardcore finale with all the D-Beat and scream moments you could ask for. Whether it's on the stellar opener Lied To that crawls with sludgy dread towards gruesome climaxes, or straight grind madness on the shorter Fagged Out on the Beach and Sow Control, Prayer for Terrene is a nonstop smash of dopamine in a wickedly tempestuous form.
