I’m Starting to Hate This Cornfield

So I was really hoping I wouldn’t have anything else to write about after my last post, but apparently the cornfield had other plans. 😂

Last night I had to take my dog outside before bed. I always take my flashlight because once you get away from the one light by the dumpster, it gets dark as shit out here. I had already told myself I was going to bring my phone too, just in case I heard that weird crunching again and could actually record it.

Guess what I fucking forgot.

My phone.

I didn’t realize until I was already outside with my flashlight in one hand and my dog’s retractable leash in the other. I reached for my phone and immediately remembered it was sitting inside charging. I almost went back for it, but my dog was already wandering around sniffing everything, and I figured I was only going to be outside for a few minutes anyway.

At first, everything was normal. He was doing his usual thing where he has twelve whole feet of leash to work with but somehow needs to investigate the same patch of grass for five minutes. 😂 I kept shining my flashlight toward the corn every once in a while, mostly because of what happened the night before, but I didn’t see anything.

Honestly, after a few minutes I started feeling stupid for being so freaked out about it. We’re outside city limits, surrounded by fields. There are obviously animals out here. Deer, raccoons, whatever else is running around at night. I pretty much convinced myself that whatever I heard the first night was probably just an animal in the corn and my brain made it seem creepier because it was dark.

Then I heard it again.

It was just one crunch from somewhere inside the corn. I stopped walking and my dog stopped with me. I pointed my flashlight toward where I thought it came from, but I couldn’t see shit. The corn is so tall right now that once something is a few rows in, there’s really no way I’m going to see it anyway.

I stood there listening for a little bit, expecting to hear another crunch, but there was nothing. What was weird was that it sounded farther down the field this time. It wasn’t coming from the same place where I thought I heard it the night before.

I started walking again, and I was actually waiting to see if it would start matching my footsteps like before.

It didn’t.

Nothing followed my steps. Nothing moved. Nothing happened.

That actually made me feel better because I was like, okay, there you go. It’s a fucking animal. Whatever was in there moved to a different part of the field. Mystery solved.

My dog finally did his business, and we started heading back toward the apartment. We were almost back when he suddenly stopped and turned around.

This time he wasn’t looking at the corn.

He was looking behind us.

I turned around and shined my flashlight across the grass. I checked toward the other apartment building, the parking area and over toward the dumpster. I couldn’t see anybody outside. The only real light out there was the one by the dumpster, and everything beyond it was basically just darkness.

I told him, “There’s nothing there. Come on.”

He started walking again, but he kept looking behind us. He wasn’t barking or growling or acting completely terrified. He would just walk a few feet, turn his little ass around, stare behind us for a second and then keep going.

I’m not gonna lie, that was starting to freak me out more than the noise in the corn.

Dogs hear things we don’t, though, especially him. He could’ve heard another animal moving somewhere or somebody in one of the apartments. There are eight apartments here, so it’s not like we’re completely alone. I kept reminding myself of that until we got back inside.

The second I locked the door, I saw my phone sitting exactly where I left it.

Great job, me. 😂

After that everything was normal for a while. I made something to eat and messed around in the kitchen for a bit. I was actually starting to forget about what happened outside.

Later that night I went back into the kitchen to get something and noticed my dog wasn’t following me. Usually if I’m anywhere near the kitchen, he magically appears because there’s always the possibility that I might drop food and apparently that is his full-time job.

I called him, but he stayed in my bedroom.

I didn’t think much of it until I noticed he was looking toward the kitchen.

I asked him what he was doing, and he just kept staring.

At first I thought maybe he heard something outside again. My kitchen window faces the cornfield, just like my bedroom window does, and when it’s quiet inside you can hear more than you’d think.

So I stood there and listened.

Nothing.

I went back to what I was doing and then heard this rustling sound outside.

It wasn’t loud. If I had the TV on or was doing dishes or something, I probably wouldn’t have even noticed it. It sounded like corn leaves moving around, which obviously isn’t unusual when you literally live next to a cornfield.

I looked toward the window anyway.

My curtain was closed, so I couldn’t see outside. I stood there debating whether I even wanted to look because I already knew exactly what was going to happen. I was going to open the curtain, see absolutely fucking nothing, scare myself and then feel stupid afterward.

Curiosity won. Obviously. 😂

I turned the kitchen light off so I could actually see outside, grabbed my flashlight and moved the curtain enough to look out.

Nothing.

Just the grass and the corn.

I moved the flashlight slowly along the edge of the field and didn’t see anything moving. I stood there for probably another minute before deciding I was done being ridiculous.

I closed the curtain and turned around.

A few seconds later, something tapped the window.

I froze.

It wasn’t loud at all. It was just a little tap against the glass. Honestly, if I hadn’t already been standing there listening for noises, I probably would’ve ignored it.

I waited to see if it happened again.

It did.

Same little tap.

At that point I turned around and stared at the curtain like an idiot because apparently I expected it to explain itself. 😂

I opened it again and put the flashlight toward the window.

There was nothing there.

And before anybody says it was a branch, there aren’t any branches touching that window. There’s grass between my apartment and the cornfield.

I’m not saying somebody or something was standing outside my window either because that sounds fucking insane. It could’ve been a bug hitting the glass. Something could’ve blown into it. There are plenty of completely normal explanations for two little taps on a window.

Still closed the curtain pretty damn fast though. 😂

My dog never came into the kitchen while I was looking outside. Once I was done, I went back into my bedroom and he acted completely normal again.

This morning I took him outside and everything was fine. Broad daylight makes the entire place look completely different. He wasn’t staring at anything, nothing was moving around in the corn, and I felt kind of stupid for letting myself get freaked out again.

But when we walked around the side near my kitchen window, I noticed a couple pieces of dried corn leaves lying in the grass underneath it.

I’m not saying that means anything. We are literally surrounded by cornfields. The wind could’ve blown them over there without me ever noticing.

Actually, that’s exactly what I’m choosing to believe happened. 😂

The noise was an animal. The tapping was probably a bug. The corn leaves were from the wind, and my dog was probably hearing something completely normal that I couldn’t hear.

There. All explained.
