Continuing my Insidious binge with the third film. This is the first movie in the series to be directed by someone other than James Wan (Of Saw and Conjuring fame). This one leaves the Lambert family to follow the origin story of Elise, Specs, and Tucker as they hunt down a new ghost to rescue an injured teen girl.
"I always wanted to know how I go"
On the technical side of things, I thought the sound mixing was much worse in this one. Dialogue was often too quiet and the jump scares were over-the-top loud. It was a bit of a battle with the volume bar to keep the sound consistent. The set design didn't feel special, but it wasn't bad by any means. Just alright. The costuming for the main ghost was alright. He felt creepy and I liked the special effect of his mask coming off.
The story didn't stand out to me. It had an overly sentimental ending which did irritate me. I don't enjoy long, drawn-out scenes of characters being emotional when twenty minutes ago the teen girl had her legs broken in six different ways. I feel like there are bigger issues at hand.
"This is my 'whoop-ass' face. When you see this face, it means I'm about to whoop ass."
The acting is definitely worse in this instalment, but you could blame the writing and directing before you blame the actors. It was cheesy and stiff, but seeing previously beloved characters made it bearable.
On a final note, I liked the jump scares. I feel like they did enough to create and release tension and the classic Insidious human v. demon showdown was good here too. Overall, it's worth a watch as a part of the franchise but I wouldn't recommend it on its own.
