Is true love sexist propaganda?

I saw on instagram this girl who wrote about this topic for an essay and I couldn't stop thinking about it. I can understand why the idea of true love is sold to people (especially young girls), as sexist propaganda, but I also think it depends on what perspective you take.

I spoke to my friend about it and she completely disagreed. She talked about how she believes that there is such thing as finding a partner who you are 'meant to be with'. I personally thought this was a really naive take.

To be honest the theory is cruel. The idea that you have to search for the 'one and only' and then you'll be the happiest you'll ever be. Maybe that's just my wrong perception but it just sounds absurd.

What do you guys think?

I think that it’s way too heteronormative. It trains us to see romantic (and sexual, since we love pairing those things together) relationships above all and make us believe that the only thing that will make us complete and that we can never be fully content without it. I think it’s put on as high of a pedestal that it is to make us reproduce more.

As an aroace person I do think it’s quite weird, and sexist due to depictions of ‘true love’ always has the couple having children by the end of it. Everything we see, we see for a reason, and that’s the point of ‘romance’ in the eyes of society. Children, as I said before. It’s just odd. People can be perfectly content without romance AND children.
