It’s a pocket.

When I was a little kid in school, we got those name tags that said, “Hello, my name is,” and then you wrote your name on them.

I cut the middle out of mine so it looked like a little frame. Then I stuck it on my shirt because I thought it looked like a pocket. I was just doing a dumb little kid thing. I wasn’t trying to get attention.

But the other kids kept asking me, “Why do you have a square on your shirt?”

I told them, “It’s a pocket.”

They kept saying it was just a square. I didn’t really understand why they cared so much.

When I got home, I started thinking about it. I wondered what would happen if I put other shapes on my shirt, maybe a circle or a triangle. But I didn’t really want everybody looking at me again, so I tried different colors instead. Sometimes people noticed, and sometimes they didn’t.

After that, I started paying attention to shirts with stripes, patterns, and different colors. I noticed that people reacted differently depending on what you wore.

I also came to understand that most of these things had already been figured out. Faces have different shapes, for example, and you can choose eyeglass frames that complement the shape of your face. Some shapes seem to fit naturally with other shapes.

Colors work in a similar way. You can choose clothes that complement your skin tone. Skin tone doesn’t just mean whether your skin is light or dark. Skin has many different colors in it. You might have blue or pink veins, freckles, reddish areas, darker spots, or other small differences. All of those things give your skin a certain tone.

Then you can choose clothing colors that work well with those tones. People have already studied all of this and written it down. I thought it was fascinating that certain colors complement other colors and certain shapes complement other shapes.

But I think the main reason I started paying attention was that I didn’t want attention from the other kids.

As I got older, I noticed the same thing with all kinds of clothing. You could put certain things together and get attention from certain kinds of people. Other clothes made people leave you alone.

I think I slowly learned how to dress in a way that didn’t bring me much attention. I kept doing that for years without really thinking about it.

I’m still not exactly sure what it means.
