[Quick note: I am not a professional internet movie reviewer. So, Buddy is basically a parody of 90's/2000's children's TV shows, specifically Barney, the entire main villain being based off of him, and somewhat Lazy Town (?) i dunno, never watched much of it, but it did remind me of what i've seen of it. Where Buddy gets exposed by one of the kids who consist of: Freddy, Hannah, Josh, Wade, and Oliver- for killing one of the following children, Josh for not dancing with them, and as things escalate, they flee, seeking help and a safer place to spend their days at, while being hunted by their "I promise I'm not angry at you!" abusive angry unicorn!
So, lets start with the not-so-good, so once you read the so-good part, we'll all feel happy!!
Personally, I don't exactly know if its just me, but the plot just felt scrambled, the Diamond City (that would soon just be proven to be a prop), the queer cowboys that might have appeared in the show for a while (and they COULD be lying, but they still dropped that entire "diss track" lore that I'll get in a bit), the alleged now deceased "class clown" kid that made a diss track on Buddy, that caused him to be killed, which to it's credit did come back into the film, having the song turn Buddy basically into Godzillia, that weird Scientist unicorn down at the Worry Well, there being other unicorns in the show that haven't appeared, Buddy basically kidnapping children for his show. Some of those just felt pretty unutilized or out of place, though I could be wrong, again, I'm just a random teen that has never directed a full-length movie or written any award written movie critiques or whatever movies critics do. And this has probably just been a bias of mine and having a different kind of humor, but the entire "lolz, kids saying swears and saying things kids shouldn't say!!!" gag was a bit more dragged and cringe to me than funny. Though again, thats more of a bias than a flaw.
NOW, for the fun part- what I liked about the film!
One of my most favorite parts of this film- were 10000% the costumes and set design! You can tell how much hard work and dedication that they've put in how well the overly-colorful-ish costume design (and even not just for Barney and all the other mascot-suited characters!) sorta actually looks like actual 2000's G-rated film, and how damn WELL the props, minor characters (like the talking furniture in the film), overall set design. Love that shit!! And just from seeing people talk about it, I knew that this film's props and overall stylization WOULD NOT DISSAPOINT A BIT. And despite what I said about the movie's comedy earlier- i DID enjoy some of the jokes in it! I thought the way Josh (the first kid to fall victim to Buddy in the film) died off screen so casually, along with how some other deaths were handled (another example being the first nurse's death.) along with Buddy just snapping at some points, yet still putting up the "cheery-friendly unicorn" act up. Like as much as I'd like to- there just aren't enough words in the dictionary on how talented, how dedicated, how creative the set and costumes were in this film. And I wish there were! Not just so I could keep endlessly praising it- but so the "pro's" section isn't shorter than the "cons", and I hate when that happens.
Though even not mentioning the prop or set design, theres MORE small quirks to this movie's endless amounts! You know Jordan Peele? And if you're in the horror scene- I'd DEMAND you to know! He's the creator behind multiple more recent horror hits! Such as 'Get Out', 'Us', and 'Nope'! Which I'm sure a lot of you guys are to recognize him from! "But Wormi!! Why are you bringing this completely unrelated guy to a completely unrelated movie!!!" well... turns out that he isn't ENTIRELY unconnectable to the movie! As his long time comedy partener- Keegan-Michael Key actually DOES have a pretty huge role in the film- as he is the voice of the one and only, murderous orange Barney wannabe!! So yeah! Thats really cool tbh.
