Kiwi birds are PECULIAR!

Kiwi birds are probably the most peculiar bird I can think of,, and probably the funniest too.

But first,

BEWARE!

This is my very first blog, DO NOT!!!! pelt me with tomatoes for I while panic!!! I am not used to such things so I do apologize if there are any mistakes or if this is the most boring thing you have come across here 

But anywho..

The kiwi (specifically the brown kiwi, Apteryx australis, if I’m not mistaken) is a ground dwelling bird endemic to New Zealand and the size of your average chicken (not very big) and are also the smallest of the ratites (emus, cassowaries and such) Sadly, they are quite endangered due to deforestation :-((

Kiwis do not fly, which is well known. “But how on earth did they adapt to ground life????” You may ask yourself,,

Well, fellow reader, I have your answer! 

For starters, let’s look at their skeleton. Most birds have light-weight hollow bones, but a kiwis bone is actually filled with marrow! Another thing is that their wings are so teensy tiny you can hardly see them. And to add to the fact their wings are so itty bitty they actually lack a keel, which would give them a flat chest (perhaps an investment in a push-up bra may help?) 

Another thing is that, unlike other birds who have their nostrils at the top of their beaks, kiwis have it at the bottom/end of theirs and have a sensitive bill. Their feathers are rather fur-like and they also have the smallest eye relative to body mass in all the avian species! 

They also.. don’t have a tail? Flat bums ig..

And to wrap it all up, their eggs take up 20-25% percent of the mothers body.. which is like a LOT.. hardly leaving any space for the organs (eugh)
