[Minecraft] Gaslight has returned, now what?

This will be quite an opener, but why not?

While doing some research for an upcoming blog post, I found out that Gaslight, the Minecraft Chat Report exploit/mod that Falsely Reports People(tm) and sparked the creation of mods like No Chat Reports, has made a comeback this June. And while it's not the magnum it was when it was first reveled, it should set into motion how this problem is not going away.

Many projects and services are going to be vulnerable to exploits, lest they continue to underpay and undercut moderation. ROBLOX is a gaming platform infamous for banning you for so much as saying the word "gay" or "fat", even on its own with no negative intent. While not comparable to Minecraft (especially in the Chat Reports nonsense), it's noteworthy, as ROBLOX has many problems from incompetent staffing, to the aforenoted moderation failures, up to the rampant account theft that continues to this day.

But given that Gaslight still has a concept, even if not easily abusable, or requiring a lot of work to make it possible, is a bad thing. Learn from the banwaves. If a bunch of hackers can get your Java account banned, even if only for a few days, what could happen to your said account if a skilled hacker managed to make an exploit like it, so severe, you might lose your account permanently?

Or what if a lot of people lose their account to this scale? What if instead of involving a few select, high popularity people, this affected millions of innocent players?

We'll touch this more on a future post, but this shouldn't be brushed off as a sort of 'quick scare', when platforms enforcing moderation with a bunch of AI can, and has failed worse than Microsoft has so far. And it could get ugly, fast.
