Mini Review: Eye for an Eye.

Eye for an Eye is a 2022 wuxia film directed by Yang Binjia and stars Xie Miao (also known as Mo Tse).

The film revolves around wine loving bounty hunter "Blind Cheng" Cheng Yi who, after learning a powerful clan slaughtered a bride's family, goes on a bloody revenge on the killers involved.

Eye for an Eye in my opinion is essentially an old samurai/wuxia film from the 60s or 70s made in the present day, it's a very "shut your brain off and just watch the action" type of film. Very straight forward plot with no twists or turns and is mostly just Xie Miao beating people up.

This film is very beautifully shot, like every few minutes they just drop a shot that just looks insane and it kinda blew me away as it wasn't something I was expecting from the film. The best ones in my opinion, are when it's raining or snowing as it enhances the fight like crazy, the way the rain falls adds so much coolness to these fights.

The action is, obviously, the best part of the film. Instead of chopping people up with his rather large cane sword (I thought he had a bo staff in the beginning), Blind Cheng uses martial arts to break peoples bones.

I don't think there really is a single person this man fought without getting half their limbs broken, seriously he's brutal. Every fight scene is filled with loud bone shattering hits and screams instead of your usual thuds and groans that would accompany a fist fight.

I really enjoyed the usage of the martial arts for the majority of the film as it provided more variety in the action than your usual blind swordsman would.

And the sword fighting is just as good too, it's fast and bloody and overall feel like I'm watching a Zatoichi film, which Eye for an Eye is a pastiche of, they're quick one minute or less duels at blink and you'll miss speeds.

People are flying around, swords get lit on fire, people get sliced up, it's honestly just a really fun watch in general.

This film heavily relies on Xie Miao's character, much like other blind swordsmen films Eye for an Eye makes it perfectly clear how much of a badass he is. He's an unstoppable relentless force who kills, kills, kills, with no end in sight to his bloodshed.

Everyone else isn't too memorable, neither the villain or the allies of Blind Cheng really offer much memorability, which is unfortunate.

While Eye for an Eye is a low budget direct to streaming film, it reigns supreme over mountains of slop in the genre due to a decent story, great action, and a pretty badass protagonist.

I would recommend this film to fans of Mo Tse, Zatoichi fans, or people who just want a quick film watch as Eye for an Eye is only 77 minutes long, which is pretty short.

That's all for now, Love and Peace!

Kudos: 2
