Mini Review: Eye for an Eye 2: Blind Vengeance.

Eye for an Eye 2: Blind Vengeance is an action drama directed by Yang Binjia and stars Xie Miao and Yang Enyou.

The sequel revolves around blind bounty hunter Blind Cheng (Xie Miao), who takes in orphan Zhang Xiaoyu (Yang Enyou) following the murder of his brother and wishes to seek revenge through the training and help of Blind Cheng.

If I'm being honest, I fully expected Eye for an Eye 2 to be just like the first film. Full of action and little emphasis on the story, but instead, in stark contrast, proved to be a really good balance between the action and emotional drama.

While Blind Cheng is portrayed only as "the super cool emotionless badass who can crush 100 men in 3 minutes" in the first film, the sequel actually provides more depth to his character and actually gave him some pretty decent character development too.

And I really enjoyed the bond between both characters, while it is your typical Lone Wolf and Cub style trope / story, it felt natural and the character development of Blind Cheng going from "Go away, kid SCRAM!" To "You're not so bad after all," and legitimately caring for Zhang Xiaoyu was heartwarming to see.

The middle of the film is filled with a handful of montages showing the two working together and it's a huge change of tone considering the rest of the film, it's happy and light-hearted in comparison to the rest of the film which is rather serious.

And for once, there's actually a moment of comedy, sure it's only a 10-15 second sequence of Blind Cheng bumping into objects and slipping on water, but it's more comedy than the rest of the two films combined.

I definitely do enjoy the extra 15 minutes of runtime the sequel gets as it definitely feels a lot slower than the first Eye for an Eye, which goes from A to B very quickly. Not to mention it allowed the film to actually flesh out their characters, which was a major flaw the first film had. It relied too much on the action.

And speaking of, I do enjoy how they handled the action a little bit more in the first film. It's definitely less brutal, less bone-breaking hand-to-hand combat and sadly, less sword usage. It's editing is rather wonky too, it's a bit fast at some points and didn't really allow me to fully soak in the scene at certain points.

The action is still great, don't get me wrong, but it just lacks the oomph the first film's action had. I did enjoy how they use Zhang Xiaoyu to help guide Blind Cheng through some fights, it's a unique case and I enjoyed it.

But just like the first film, there isn't too much else to report on. It's got action, Xie Miao, drama, and a pretty good execution of the Lone Wolf and Cub trope. It's a pretty good sequel and honestly better than the first film in general.

I would recommend this film to fans of the blind swordsman trope, Xie Miao fans, and for those looking for a good martial arts film.
