Mulholland Dr. (2001)

Like any Lynch movie, this one is a lot to unpack. Following the story of "Rita" and "Betty" is really interesting as the two women try to attain their goals in the backdrop of a film industry that is teeming with grime. I feel like there are themes of unrequited lesbian love and failing to achieve your dreams.

This wasn't a movie I could particularly connect with, but I enjoyed the dream-like, near-death visual sequences that ramped up in the third act. I got a lot of Rusty Lake vibes (mostly from the blue cube) as well as a few Perfect Blue themes. 

The actors all did a great job, especially "Betty". I loved how bright her eyes could get in a scene, reflecting all the light in a room. They all played off of each other in a surreal but natural way. At times, some scenes reminded me of Silent Hill in the way that the characters talk at each other instead of with each other.

I always love the set design of a David Lynch film and this one is no exception. Each room feels less than a reflection of a character choice and more like a window into their soul. Scratched wooden doors, muted velvet, dark walls, and amber lighting. The outdoor shots are so vibrant like postcards. 

I will say that the sound design wasn't great for me. Maybe it was just my set up but whispered conversations would be interrupted by loud bangs that drowned out any background noise. The soundtrack also didn't stand out to me, which is a shame since I usually love whatever Angelo Badalamenti touches.

Overall, it's worth a watch especially for my IRL cinephile buddies but it just didn't stick with me.
