i talk about these guys' music all the time on my outside blog, but again, don't really know a lot of folks who like their music, too.
this is daphne loves derby. they were active from around 2001 to sometime in the late 2000s-early 2010s, with jason call (bassist) releasing some old songs and demos later on. (horrible sound is free on bandcamp, btw, if you're into it.)
what i really love about their music is the sort of. i'm not exactly sure if i'd call it whimsical, but there's something otherworldly about the lyrics that somewhat remind me of owl city. it's like they're an even more rock-oriented, more angsty owl city. (which i guess is just sky sailing. but with even more rock. trust me on this!)
a lot of their songs remind me of cold summer vacations. the waters are pale blue and sparkling, the skies are clear, and yet the wind still sends shivers up your arms. it's beautiful, yet melancholy, and a current of angst-filled change runs underneath every memory. it's so palpable, i love it so much.
that being said, i tend to listen to the newer releases and on the strength of all convinced the most. my favorite songs are you versus the sea and kirby, the former of which actually segues into the latter in the album.
i also have a few of their songs on my profile. all of them are from the on the strength of all convinced era as well. (even though hubris was released in 2022 on a missing / obscure b-side compilation, kenny's voice makes it fair to assume they recorded it in the same era.) i've always enjoyed adding their songs as themes to my profile; i think their sound is fairly reflective of me as a person.
