MVK #1: Cobrah - Dog (and a talk about mud + femininity)

hi! i love music videos. they've been one of my favourite forms of media since i was a little kid, and i've been using the semi-serious tag 'mvk' (music video kino) to organize music video posting for a few years, so why not get semi-serious about it here? i figure i'll post a music video i'm interested in and a little about it about once a week, depending on whether the hell i feel like it or not. 

i picked dog for my inaugural video because i watched it about 10 times in a row last night, and then more later.

this video is so gnarly and sleek and simple it's like. hypnotizing. 

i've been seeing this kind of post-fetish gunge-core (?) creep into aesthetic blogs and then editorials for as long as i've been on the adult internet, and it's really entering the mainstream now w things like the 'indie sleaze' revival (wasn't that electroclash??), but i think this is the first instance i've seen in a music video that's really worked for me. like, i can't pretend i've been immune to posting dainty shoed feet stepping into mud piles after 11 years on tumblr. they just make you post that kind of stuff at some point. it's #girlblogging. 

especially on pinterest, it can be super ambiguous which image is an actual amateur fetish image and which is editorial. everyone is copying each other. the suburban hotwives want to be hot, glamorous, powerful models and the fashion photographers want the virility and edge of the suburban hotwives (without the naïvete). the flickr effect.

cobrah's been doing fun stuff with hard sexpot aesthetics before (see: good puss), and she has this unflinching 'i see you while you're seeing me' thing that's really hardcore. i think it works so well here. i love her use of the high-end fet-derived imagery here because it doesn't feel so ironic, so 'gen-z stare' (sorry), so self-effacing and non-commital like a lot of the #pale #aesthetic pics you see. 

i love this shot where it looks like she's wearing stay-ups. silly. 

a mild digression: the dainty white tight (probably on a white girl) being dipped suggestively into grime, beyond it's textural offerings (dry + soft vs. wet + mucky, it's a good dynamic or else s'mores would not exist), has its own neurotic offerings (like anything horny does) - loss of/virginity, the girl leaving the protection of the home, fears of crime and 'out there'. if you think i'm insane, consider how girlish opaque tights are considered in comparison to sheer nylons, and how direct a metaphor "dirty"/"unclean" often is for "devirginized"/"raped" (misogynists don't really differentiate these two much! they seem to care about them equally! ew!). my red-string conspiracy board is more aesthetic and twee (? is twee over again already? idc.) than yours. eat it!

i'm not arguing that every image of a girl with dirty shoes is meant to represent rape, loss of virginity, or racist paranoia. i'm not saying that if you like these aesthetics that you're creepy or racist, or that this imagery belongs to creeps and white 'alts'/aesthetic bloggers. i'm saying that having these concepts + symbols in the backs of our minds is part of why we find these images so interesting. why they're so popular. if it were just about texture, images of hands or more practical shoes in mud would be just as popular. but they're not.

so like - cobrah is not virginal or trepidatious! and it's not a wink-wink joke! i love the application of femininity + mud here. 

she tells you to eat her out over a shot of mud pouring from a crook in her legs. she looks like a trophy wife (some shots remind me of the marina 'power and control' video). she fucks, she'll fuck again, and she's unsatisfied with just being fucked.

 at moments it feels like cobrah is covered in filth because she feels dirty, like 'soiled through sex' dirty, because she wants a house up on the hillside and we just want to feel her, but it also feels dirty and doggish and gross to crave attention and devotion and discipline. the slut shame vs. the 'am i a narcissist?' shame. truly who has not felt like a mucky, dirty bitch for wanting. 

i think dog is the high femme gunge answer to girlblogger mud posting. it's more intense, it's more refined, it's less scared of itself and its promises. coquette aesthetics flirt constantly with fetish but, in their current mainstreamed state, they tend to tip-toe along the fence between fetish and sexlessness. which i guess is the appeal of coquette at all.* dog is a direct reference to gunge, to sex, to power dynamics, and therefore gives itself the room make you feel its feelings. there's just a limit to how much desperation you can express while winking. you have to get your hair wet. you have to stop pretending that part of you is clean, and you don't know you're being looked at.

in the dog high femme administration, we do not purchase sympathy with virginity. we do not run from our adult bodies. we are not afraid of the messy texture of our feelings. and we are not content just to be pleased.

get me loud, pleasing me, but i just want your sympathy

*'coquette' itself was coined to disconnect these aesthetics from the 'nymphet' origins, to create a safer environment for young girls in aesthetic spaces. this did not take. but the distance from lolita did made it more mainstreamable, so now you can buy #coquette things directly marketed to 13 year old girls. i do not believe in a moral arc to the universe. 

ps. i'm not saying that you can't ever have fun being girlish or that there's nothing interesting to do with playing on girlish aesthetics - i like cute things - i just think it's time there's room for something else. 

pps. i put this in movies & tv because it's more about the video than the song? ik it's a little awkward but it felt right. 

ppps. no prommies that next mvk will be as long as the next one! i think they will vary!
