MVK #3: trouble is a friend - lenka

Trouble Is a Friend is Music Video Kino!

Has anyone else been possessed by this forgotten aesthetic movement lately? Remember it? The swirls & splashes of metro, the pink & black of scene, the frills of twee, the mystery & suspense of goth...this style has been somewhat revived, if zombified, as '*morute' (morbid + cute) and in some subsets of coquette, but nothing hits like that crafty proto-PLL poison cupcake situation. In my own head I conflate it a bit with the aesthetics of the aforementioned Pretty Little Liars as well as The Vampire Diaries, but it was on its way out at that time and has more to do with the branding for said shows than the actual costuming and set design. In my head (& pinterest) I tend to just call it 'pop-gothic', because what else would it be?? It's like mall-goth's mean older sister.

Pop-gothic saw you stole her lacy ardene tights and she's SUPER pissed

Something I've got to love about this era is the 60s inspiration...the 80s were the 60s....(the b-52's)...the 90s were the 60s...(dee-lite, mod resurgence)....the 2000s were the 60s (babydoll, bond-girl aesthetics, bubble hems)...the 2010s were the 60s (coral, mint, chunky jewelry)....the 2020s are less so but are also the 60s (sabrina carpenter's whole thing, micro-minis). Almost every year since the 60s has been the 60s.

If you couldn't do this eye in 2009, they just killed you.

It used to be that they gave you a free bubble silhouette with just about anything, but then skinny jeans happened.

I think it's time we bring this back, but not too fast - it's the kind of thing that feels best when it's small. I know there is a dedicated Pretty-Little-Liars-As-Fall-Tradition fanbase, I say we dedicate winters to dressing like heiresses with dead step-parents and valium-concealing toe rings. And vampire boyfriends.

Gasp! You discovered my torrid diary in which I confess my many manslaughters! It is actually, like, from torrid.

This makes me miss Ruby Gloom...

Some imagery from my pinterest board for aesthetic reference!

* For me...I'm more of a 'morbiditwee' girl. More warmer corals to cool pinks, more fairytale illustration to vent art. I find it more nostalgic as a gen z who is millenial on my siblings' side :P. No Clue how The Aesthetic Authorities describe this, but 'morbiditwee' suits me! It seems like I'm the only one using the tag on tumblr...get on it taxonomy dorks!
