My thoughts and review of: Nimrods (The New Green Day Movie)

So yesterday last night I went out to go see the new Green Day movie Nimrods and I wanted to write my thoughts and review while its still fresh in my mind. I honestly would of picked a different time but my brother also wanted to go see it; so picking at a very late showing was my only option. But enough about me what about the movie? If  you don't feel like reading a whole novel then I'd suggest you just scroll to the bottom to read a TLDR so that you can move on with your day or night or if you don't feel like reading that much. I'll try to not spoil the movie as it technically came out last night, but you haven't seen it then probably stop reading this sentence and go spend 30 plus USD on movie tickets and GO! But if you don't care or already watched it then keep reading.

The movie its basically a comedy coming of age story following a teen punk band by the name of Analog Dogs, but through out the movie you'll hear the joke of their name being Anal OG Dogs or just Anal Dogs. Their words not mine. At that point you might as well just change it the band name to be that as it's what your being known for. Through out the the whole you'll probably be seeing a lot and I mean A LOT of green day history references through out the time that the band is traveling. For example the movie poster above this paragraph is a reference to Woodstock 94 when Green Day had a huge mud fight with the audience.

This movie is very much for the fans and if you don't know alot about Green Day and their history then there's alot of references that would probably fly over your head. But let's talk about the characters in the movie! There's Tommy the lead singer and guitarist and probably has the most influence on the rest of the band and the master mind behind all their plans through out the movie. Fred the easy going and basically the dumb guy of the band who also plays bass, which honestly act and talks more like Green Days drummer Tre Cool, which is not a bad thing, I honestly think that Fred is my favorite character through out the movie. And the last character of the band is Chad. Chad is more the shy and nervous character and honestly he's probably the most reliable character in the movie to me. He's kind of the smartest one out of the 3 but not like brain smart more like down to earth kind of guy when hearing out Tommy's plans. There is a love interest in the movie named is Olivia, but sadly she isn't used much in the movie, only to have a teen crush and that's basically her role. There's Tommy's older brother who's basically the closest thing that Tommy had to a father figure. They fight alot but that's what having siblings is like, I would know, trust me.

But what about the story? What's the story like? Well I told you the first part of it being a comedic coming of age story of a teen punk band, but the whole plot is this: Tommy and Fred get to meet Green Day in person (IT SHOULD OF BEEN ME, NOT HIM! IT's NOT FAIR! >:( ) and they give Green Day their demo song Bored and unironically they put their phone number on the cassette tape (which the song and a whole album was released with the movie along side of it, which I have to buy soon). I believe the next day they get a call from Tre Cool asking them to open for them all the way in LA California on New Years Eve. Which by the way, this takes place in Kansas City and these are like 17 year old kids without licenses, so traveling from Missouri to California is a long way to go. So of course Tommy being the master mind behind this whole operation, come up the genius plan of stealing his brothers car to get to LA, but of course its never that easy to get what you want. So you can imagine all the trouble they had to get through on the way over there.

Through out the movie you'll be hearing alot of Green Day songs play out the time when they're traveling or when they're playing for people, there are some original songs in the movie too, like Bored again and another song from the Analog Dogs Freak Out. But there are some actual small bands that actually got to participate in the movie, which is like really freaking cool, like the band The Paradox. Which I have seen float around on Instagram, and honestly after watching their insta and seeing them in the movie, I'd go see them live in person. It really cool seeing a big band like Green Day give a small band a chance to get their name out there in this movie, BIG W for Green Day for that!

Alot of high emotions does get through the band as they travel to LA. You can actually feel the frustration and doubt that the band has as they travel together, even as adults traveling can be stressful when you don't have alot of money or your close to breaking down your car, you can feel that in this movie through the character as they argue and have doubt. Which makes sense, this is a band that no one has heard of to open for a big band like Green Day. But of course you would have to find out what happens in the end by going to the theater and watching the movie.

For comedy movie, its pretty good! Not alot of comedy movie usually gets a high rating, usually they just make alot of dumb jokes that are pretty predictable or just fall flat in general and most of the time they don't exactly have likeable characters. Thankfully this movie does have likeable characters, like I said Fred is my favorite but I can see why people would like Tommy and Chad and the relatability that some of the characters have in the movie. I see the amount of responsibility that Tommy's brother has trying to take care of Tommy or when Chad starts to doubt that Green Day would want Analog Dogs open for them. Its understandable really. But the movie does have a fast pacing problem, which seems to effect alot of movies nowadays, honestly it should of been longer but 1h 45 minutes is pretty long in itself and again with Olivia, I wish she had a bigger role to play than just being Tommy's teenage crush, but what can you do I guess.

My ratings for this movie: 8.5/10

TLDR:

its a comedy coming of age story of a punk band that is trying to open for Green Day on new years eve and they get into a lot of shenanigans and alot of high emotions and doubt trying to get to LA from Kansas City.

Thank you for reading :D
