I had been cooking for a few minutes when the song "Meu Refrigerador Não Funciona" ("My Refrigerator Doesn't Work"), by the band Os Mutantes, began to play on my smartphone. (I always cook and wash the dishes while listening to music. After all, what’s the point of living without music?)
I remember the first time I heard this song, back in April 2026, in the kitchen of my friend Maria Eduarda Pires’s house in the city of Foz do Iguaçu—just days after I’d dropped out of the college my father had been paying for.
Despite the song’s quirky lyrics—a hodgepodge of English and Portuguese—I found myself reflecting on how striking Arnaldo Baptista’s voice truly is. I’m grateful for that February night when, out of sheer curiosity, I first explored the musical catalog of this iconic group—a band featuring Arnaldo Baptista, his brother Sérgio Dias Baptista, and the legendary Rita Lee Jones. I fell in love that very night.
Lately, I’ve been fantasizing about a romantic love — a man who could offer me warmth, comfort, and a profound emotional connection. The moment this song started playing, I pictured this man with Arnaldo Baptista’s voice. A unique, authentic voice—one my ears could recognize from vast distances, in any time or place.

When it comes down to it, perhaps I should tear through the fabric of space-time and find him in the 60's city of São Paulo. Maybe I’m just feeling a bit needy. Maybe I’m curious about what a reciprocal love actually feels like. Maybe I covet the magical artistic connection that Rita Lee shared with him during their time in the band. Perhaps my soul is akin to Rita Lee’s — after all, his voice was likely a major turn-on for her, too.
Yet, ironically, every voice is unique, just as every person is different from one another. Therefore, the most significant aspect of our individuality is our personality — for while everyone is unique, not everyone is authentic. The human voice is a powerful source of magic; what do you use yours for?
