(Not so) Weekly Blog Post #4

Hey all, it's me again!

It's been a LONG while since I've made a post, huh. Well, there's a lot of reasons behind that, in which a lot of them I'd like to go over!

Where have I been?

With all the reasons that I have been gone, one of the main reasons is that a lot of days, I just haven't felt like posting on here. There's no specific reason, I usually just get tired from other stuff I've done in the day. (even if that isn't much at all) But, I've been wanting to keep you guys up to date on what's going on even when I don't say much, and I've got a lot to show off!

Another reason why I haven't been posting much alongside all the working is because I'm heading off to University this week! It's a whole new experience for me since I've never lived alone before, but I'm hoping that it's all gonna go well. Considering my course is Game Design, I'm gonna be keeping you guys updated on all my new projects. (with it hopefully helping me design games like Doohickeyotron better)

Speaking of which, what's been going on with Doohickeyotron? Well, a lot actually!

Doohickeyotron Dev Update - A lot of stuff

In the past 3 weeks, I've basically been able to get all of Doohickeyotron's gameplay done, leaving only the level design & the cutscenes to be added now, here's a rundown on all the new stuff that I made!

The Dialogue System

The dialogue system is a new mini UI system that I made for DEMO 1 of Doohickeyotron. It most likely won't be used outside of the Testing Grounds but that's for story-based reasons. Who knows though, it might be re-used anyway depending on how I feel about it.

Anyways, the dialogue system was a lot of fun to implement! I had to create a lot of new functions for it along with reworking some of the 2D UI to implement it, but it's turned out really well!

It primarily works off of json files, which allow me to easily split the dialogue trees up into their own files instead of all being bundled up in one giant file filled to the brim with variables, that sounds like a nightmare!

Anyways, enough tech talk, here's a little look into how it works with one of the info slots!

Apart from the new dialogue system, one of the other things I've been working on is...

The Abilities!

Yup! The Control Plug abilities are fully complete! They overall didn't actually take that long and were really fun to develop, I had to make a whole bunch of new sprites for one, but it turned out looking really good in the end!

As with all gameplay features in Doohickeyotron, I've made a new system for the abilities so that I can easily create new ones whenever I decide to make new forms for future DEMOs/updates.

There's not too much else to say compared to the previous post about Control Plugs, so I'll just show off the ability I'm most proud of: Detection!

It's a little vague on what they do currently, but don't worry! The info slots explain a lot about each ability and what they do while integrating gameplay into their tutorials, like shown here!

With those two out of the way, there's one more thing I've been working on

The Multi-cam System

This is one I'm really proud of, and one that took a while to get working because of how tedious it was.

The Multi-cams are a system that uses the static cameras that Doohickeyotron levels have and lets multiple of them be used to create even larger levels than shown before! The whole thing works similar to the room cameras in Rain World, which is where I got a lot of my inspiration for both the Multi-cam & future parts of Doohickeyotron from.

This was something that I've been trying to get my head around for ages as I wasn't fully sure how I'd A: Implement it, and B: Design it to begin with. However, while on my way out a few days ago, I had suddenly gotten a full concept in my head how the new system would work technically and had to quickly write it down on my notes app for later. And wouldn't you guess, it almost worked!

I had to make a few tweaks here and there due to my old GameMaker brain trying to make things more complicated, but I realised I could just use areas instead, which made the process a MILLION times easier. That being said, there were a lot of issues with camera priorities and all that, but that's all been solved!

I don't wanna get TOO into the nitty gritty, so I'll instead just show off how the whole thing looks in-game!

Well, that seems to be everything to catch up on from Doohickeyotron for now, I'm hoping to release the DEMO really soon, as it's really just levels at this point (and story too!).

I suppose I'll just leave this section here with a low quality GIF of something new.

The Misc part where I talk about other things going on

Mini Game Rant: Baldi Battle Royale

Ok this is gonna sound really stupid, but I'm for some reason addicted to this game.

It's one of those big multiplayer team games with 20 people on each side and you gotta strategise on a big map, but everyone is Baldi. It's really stupid but for some reason it's genuinely so much fun to play and watch 40 people fight on old Roblox maps as Baldi.

I'd recommend trying it out for yourself if you're bored & don't got much else to do.

Really funny looking Money Pot I bought at a Market

Ok so a few weeks back, I went to a local market nearby just because it seemed interesting, and oh boy, did they have some interesting items.

There was basically a bunch of random stuff there (including the front shell of a slot machine for some reason?) but out of everything there, I got this guy along with 2 other random items.

I really don't know what happened to it, but I think the paint job is really funny and is something I immediately needed for my Uni dorm.

I also got a copy of Foodfight (that one animated movie, yes, the terrible one) and an Angry Birds Hot Wheels car (which I didn't even know existed lmao).

Overall, W market, would shop again.

Song of the Weeks?

Since I missed a couple of weeks, I'd like to go over my candidates for Song of the Week for those that I missed.

Week 4: Garn47 - Half A Sentry

This is a song I've been listening to for weeks, and I absolutely love every moment of it. I think overall so far, it's the best song in the entire soundtrack, especially at around a minute in.

Take a listen here!

Week 5: music because of her

This is an album I had discovered recently and immediately fell in love with. There's something really special about how everything sounds and it's like you can feel the emotion within each song, I especially love the song 'Thank You' as it feels like such a beautiful conclusion to what once was along with bringing back the motifs from the rest of the album.

Listen to the full album here!

Week 6: Psychic Chime - Keep On Running

I had recently re-discovered an old Tankman animation that this song was made for, only to find out that a full version had actually released of it. I took a listen, and I find it great! It's such a nice little tune to listen to, along with the animation that it was made for being incredible! I'll link both below.

Check out the animation here!

Check out the song here!

Anyways, that's about everything from me for now, what a big catch up!

I'd hope for stuff to be more consistent soon, but with the lack of knowledge I actually have on how Uni itself is gonna go, I'm not sure how busy I'll be. I hope to keep you guys up to date though whenever I can!

That's all from me for now though, thanks for reading!
