i'm bored and on a long road trip, so lemme rant :)
i'm strongly against blindly following social expectations and traditions. i think that herd mentality is one of the many things wrong with this world. i've questioned my own traditions, and whenever i question them in front of my parents, they deflect, tell me 'it's the way things have always been', or that 'it's our culture'. those aren't valid answers to me. if i don't have a valid justification for doing something, then i'm not doing it.
for example, i was at a wedding yesterday. in my culture, one segment of the wedding involves the bride getting 'advice' on how to be a good wife. the groom doesn't get advised, because he's perfect just the way he is, i guess. the concept in itself feels a little problematic to me, because if the marriage fails, the blame inadvertently falls on the woman. i hope you catch my drift. my other issue with this tradition is the kind of 'advice' that's given. 'obey your husband', 'don't question your husband', 'always have sex with your husband'. a lot of this 'guidance' is riddled with misogyny, and undermines the autonomy of the woman.
most people don't even know why they participate in these traditions. they allow the fact that something's been practiced for hundreds of years to cloud their judgment, and their ability to look at things through a critical lens.
anyway, those are my thoughts on that.
