Review: Oresama.

Oresama is a movie directed by Marumo and stars famous musician Miyavi in lead along with Ultraman Agul's actor Hassei Takano.

The film, which is only an hour in length, follows a fictionalized version of Miyavi who ends up in 1984 following a time slip and joins a band with Shinni (played by Takano).

Oresama is not a film I would usually watch, as I'm unfamiliar with Miyavi entirely and it just wasn't on my radar, but I was asked recently by a friend of mine if I've seen it so I figured I would watch it and give my opinion on it. So do take my review with a large grain of salt.

And I have mixed feelings on it. It feels kinda like a novelty film honestly, it's a very genreless movie, I did try to fit it into a genre but it didn't really fit any of them. It's not a sci-fi movie as the time travel just sorta happens and isn't expanded on further, nor is it a musical as the band only plays at the very end, nor is it a drama as it's so low stakes the worst that happens is Miyavi just running out of cash.

If anything, it kinda felt like I was watching reality television or an episode of a never finished anthology series. I did still enjoy the film, mostly, though.

Miyavi's performance is...weird. I agree with Shinni that he was a weirdo throughout the entire film, he has all these really exaggerated and eccentric mannerisms (such as flashy poses and a "Unleash secret technique: Wall") throughout that I did find personally funny.

He kinda spends the whole film just acting weird, he's only normal for a handful of scenes and it kinda makes the whole film really awkward when most of the film has very little background music and everyone around him just sorta, stares at him.

It fits with the whole unique vibe of the film. Things are just never expanded on, there are title cards with Miyavi's thoughts sprinkled throughout, and Miyavi just sorta exists. He doesn't panic or spend the whole film trying to get back to the present, he just, chills in the 80s.

I did also enjoy Shinni and Miyavi's friendship throughout the film, it felt very genuine between the two characters and the chemistry between the two actors was the most enjoyable part of the film for me.

Where this film does shine in my opinion is the final 10-15 minutes. It changes the film from a, well, film, to a live performance that was a lot more enjoyable for me than the majority of it.

Although, it was just a little bit hard to watch for me, don't get me wrong the music is good and I did enjoy what I could hear, it's just they recorded it from like 5 feet away from the band so it felt like watching those live performances recorded on some guys phone and it kinda killed it for me.

Maybe it's because I'm not a Miyavi fan, but this film just didn't click for me. I'm not sure why, but while I didn't enjoy it much I'm sure you will enjoy it. It's a pretty good film despite being made with a budget of about 5 dollars, and even if you don't like or know Miyavi I would still recommend it just for the uniqueness of it as a whole.
