i got around to watching both of these yesterday, especially after hearing so much from friends that weapons was the must watch horror flick of last year. ordered in some thai, switched my phone off and hunkered down to watch this double feature i had cued up and oh my days - both were absolutely superb.
tw: both these movies play heavily on adult themes of addiction, be it alcoholism or eating disorders. weapons in particular is the director's personal take on loss and grief, with alcoholism serving as the primary inspiration for his movie.
saccharine is all about self image and the lengths some people will go to in order to feel a sense of belonging and social acceptance, whilst also driving home a clear message about how the pursuit of the latter can result in the destruction of oneself. it's also grotesque, bizarre, downright crazy and hilarious at times. definitely a must watch for horror fans in search of something completely different to shake things up a bit.
weapons tackles alcoholism, the impact it causes, and the lingering trauma and backlash that comes in its wake. it's a slow burner, the progression and development of the film told through the narratives of its central characters, all the while knowing there is something insidious and malevolent growing just beneath the surface. this movie has instantly become a favorite of mine, one i'll end up watching again soon, just to see if i missed anything the first time round.
okay that is all xoxo
