"scene hair is too hard on type 4 hair!!!" nuh uh

i am a melanated mf with type 4 hair (around 4a) and i have found it to be incredibly easy to manipulate my follicles into what some may describe as...heh..."scene hair"

that last part was ironic

it is extra-remely simple if you have a huge head of hair. if you don't, idk u gonna have to grow that shit out and come back to this tutorial. anywhosies, this is a written guide as to how i as a melanated mf adapted to the scene look.

thing 1

what you'll need is:

  • a wide-toothed comb
  • curling gel (i use aunt jackie's coconut curling gelée)
  • a detangling brush
  • holding mousse OR volume foam
  • a thin headband
  • a parting comb (also known as a rat tail comb or a fine tooth comb), or use your finger
  • patience

it helps a bunch if your hair is already detangled beforehand, makes the process much less painful. also, u prolly shouldn't do this on damp hair.

STEP ONE:

  • take a parting comb (or ur finger) and part your hair behind your ear. continue parting as straight as possible around your temple until you reach the other side behind your other ear. you should have two sections of your hair separated, the back bigger than the front. then, put the headband in the part.

STEP TWO:

  • create a side-part on either side of your choice. do not stop at your temple. continue parting, including under the headband, until you reach the top of your head. then, separate your hair so the parts are distinguishable. you should have four parts, two in the front and two in the back. adjust the larger part in the front around your eye.

STEP THREE:

  • take a wide-toothed comb and a section of the parted hair in the back part. this should be the immediate hair behind your headband. comb through the ends of the hair you have in your hand and progressively work your way through the entire strand.
  • when you let go, it should stand up almost straight. continue this step with the rest of the hair behind the headband and on the other back part. you should be left with what could resemble a peacock. adjust the strands to sit however you desire, however, they should still be distinct and sticking out

STEP FOUR:

  • take your mousse or volume foam and lather it in the peacock strands. this is so they stay in place and frizz up just a bit so they blend in with the rest of your hair. as you apply the mousse/foam into your hair, pull them outward to make sure the strands don't fall inward.
  • if you need to, also apply the mousse/foam to the front part over your eye to give it volume.

STEP FIVE:

  • take your ends at the bottom of your hair and pull them down. you can have two parts in the back and two in the front like the top of your head, or move the entire bottom to your front over your shoulders. brush through the ends with the detangling brush to pull them out and apply the gel to hold them in place.
  • this is optional, but i sometimes add mousse to the bottom for extra hold.

and that's basically it!

i'll probably post a video tutorial later this month if this guide is too convoluted (im bad with words).
