Secretary (2002)

A very heartfelt adult romance. Secretary (Dir. Steven Shainberg) is like an erotic Disney film. The comforting comedy vibes may be from the moody soundtrack or the likeable characters of Lee/Mr. Grey or it could be the beautiful set design. 

Leonard Cohen makes a famous appearance on the soundtrack with his song I'm Your Man. It captures the internal thoughts of the male lead very well while pumping up the sexy 90's vibes. The rest of the track (With the exclusion of one other song) is composed by a longtime favourite composer of mine, Angelo Badalamenti. He's more famously known for his atmospheric achievements in films by David Lynch. 

James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal have incredible performances with their characters of Lee and Mr. Grey. Both of them share an electric chemistry that conveys deep desire without words. Mr. Grey's long stares and Lee's adorable advances. My bleeding heart. 

I love the set design in this film. I'm lucky enough to own the DVD which contains a photo gallery from the set. Every choice feels so intentional. The erotic image of Mr. Grey tending to his flush orchids under UV light paired with velvety walls and dark colour pallet. 

The costuming is fantastic as well. Lee is often clothed in the colour purple, partially because it's her favourite colour and partially to represent her bright and playful personality. 

This movie isn't for everyone. If you like BDSM rom-coms with happy endings and the 90's, this is a great choice. If you're picky about accuracy in consent portrayals, hate break-up arcs, and always root for the bland but well-meaning love interest, I'd give this one a pass.
