Simon and Carole's Halloween (short story written on blackberry)

This isn't the best of stories and it really isn't all that understandable if you aren't familiar with the lore of my characters but I thought I would share it anyways.

I actually wrote this on my Blackberry Classic Q20.

I hope you enjoy.

"Trick or treat!" tiny, shrill voices cried outside the doors of multiple houses on the cold dark night.

It was October 31st and that could only mean one thing, it was the night of Halloween. That time of year when the things that usually scare us are the exact things that draw us in and intrigue us. A time of year where the strange and unusual aren't as so. Perhaps a time of year where Simon Galbacki could live and be like any other thirteen year old boy.

He sat at one of the many windows of the mansion house and waded through the thick black out curtains with his blue clawed fingers. Ignoring his bright yellow eyes reflecting off of the window, he could see the festive white and orange lights littering the streets further down the hill. If he squinted his eyes a little, he could make out the shapes of small jack-o-lanterns. Through the thick glass, he could faintly hear the ghostly whispering of the wind talking with the trees. The stray cats growling, meowing with one another, waiting for their witch masters...

Does my witch have a cat? Simon shook his head.

Probably not.

Buzzz...Buzzzz

His phone sprung to life in his pocket, sending a shiver down his tail. He reached into his pocket and there on the screen, he could see a text from Carole.

'Go to your other window'

Simon gulped and sheepishly looked through one of the other windows near him. His phone buzzed again and Simon could have sworn it sent a bolt of electricity through his body. He scrambled onto his Nokia again and pulled up his text messages.

'Not those windows, the ones near the dining room'

The young boy's ears pricked up at the sound of a light knock at one of the windows near the dining room tables. Like a cat, he slowly sneaked over to the window, the old wooden floorboards giving light creaks beneath his weight. About to once again pull back the blackout curtains but this time his hand hovered above them and hesitated.

What if this wasn't Carole at all? What if this was an imposter? A criminal. What if someone had kidnapped his girlfriend and was using her as bait so they could unleash the secrets of the Galbacki curse out onto the world.

I sound just like my mom thinking like that...But when is mom ever wrong? Frick, shit...

Another knock came from the window.

Mustering all of his courage, with one glide of his hand, he swung the curtains to his side.

There was no criminal, no secret reporters and no witches, just a familiar red headed girl and her even more familiar metal smile. She appeared to be dressed up like a giant, fluffy pumpkin. The costume was practically eating her small frame.

He opened the door to the house and ushered her in. She stumbled in, trying not to drop the mini pumpkins she was also holding.

"Did I scare you Sigh? Did I?"

"Y-yeah, shitless. Why'd you do it?"

Carole looked up as she finally managed to retrieve the pumpkins, "it's Halloween. This is what it's all about, getting scared, scaring others."

Simon raised an eyebrow as the cogs in his head began to churn once more. He had only known Carole for three years but her wearing Halloween costumes wasn't a familiar data entry in his database of memories.

"Since w-when did either of us celebrate Halloween? I t-thought your mom freaks out at the whole supernatural s-s-stuff."

"She does...That's why she didn't know I made a costume and also why she doesn't know I'm here right now in said costume soo...Surprise heh"

Simon gently shut the door to shield them from the nippy cold from the outside, the door let out a creaky moan as he did. Carole's breath was shaky and raspy. Her sneakers were also coated with a fresh coat of mud. The boy used his tail to knock the girls inhaler out of her pocket and into her shaking cold red hands. It nestled neatly between the pumpkins.

"Thank you..." she said as she took a drag from the puffer.

Simon gave her a small smile before it melted like ice cream in the sun.

"Your mom...She still doesn't-"

Carole rubbed the back of her neck and bit the side of her cheek. "Yeah, I feel like she'd freak out like bad and I don't want her to say that we can't you know- like-"

"See each other" they both spoke at once.

They just stood there like that for a moment in silence. Only the diluted noises of the outside world that wasn't quite sure of what to do with them.

"You'll need to say...It's been three months, not like, not like it's serious serious but I don't like lying to your mom and stuff, you know?"

Carole sat the pumpkins down on a nearby table. She wasn't making eye contact with him now. "I know...It's just hard."

"You can tell me about it, only if it helps though!"

They were both now sitting together on the couch.

"When I'm with you, it doesn't even cross my mind you know, that you're not human. To me you're just Simon. All these adults, I love Tova and Solomon but even they make a big deal about you not being human-"

Simon opened his mouth to interject but Carole raised her hands.

"No, let me speak Sigh, please?"

He done as he was told. Carole would often go on these fanatical tangents, as if she was playing out the role of a priest or some miracle worker on tv with the way she would frail her hands about when she was passionate about something.

"Your parents tell me that I don't need to be here with you and that its asking a lot of someone so young but what is? What is too much for a girl my age, to love a boy? Is it asking a lot for one person, one person to love another person?"

"You're getting worked up again...If I was normal, you wouldn't be getting worked up over i-it. You don't realise how complex it really is...I don't think you really do. I'm not saying I don't love you! That's not it but you're human and I'm...Well me. You wouldn't be hiding me and this, this whole other world of stuff from your mom if I was human."

A beat of silence again.

"You have a lotta, a lot of kindness in your heart Carole. I think" Simon stammered as his hands grew sweaty. "You're a great girl and girlfriend but I think you forget not everybody is, is as kind as you. You g-get me?"

Carole sighed deeply, like a fallen soldier admitting defeat. "It just angers me...You're just like everybody else...We're just like everybody else. Why can't people see what I see?"

"My parents don't want anybody to see me, the real me-"

"Your mom, your mom doesn't want anybody to see the real you" Carole added. "Though I don't blame her. The world sees something beautiful, different and instead of cherishing it...They chase it out and sometimes, sometimes they even destroy it. I get your mom doesn't want people hurting you...You're right, not everyone is like me."

She had been fidgeting with her nail beds. She was picking them raw. Simon took a hold of her hands and squeezed them, letting out a low concerned chirp. She looked up at him and tried to imitate the noise but it came out wrong, like a soft barely audible wheeze.

"One thing I will say, I wish I could do the whole chirping thing like you, the only time I dislike the whole inter-species thing heh."

"I wouldn't want you any different" Simon said softly into her ear, still holding her small hands. "Even if, if it means nobody else gets me, I don't want anybody to be like you...You're the only you and I wouldn't want it any, any other way." He took his hands away and scratched at his antler buds. "You're human and that's what you are, you don't need to be anything else. Anything other than Carole Benette."

"Carole Galbacki"

"What?"

"One day I'll hopefully Mrs Carole Galbacki. Well Dr Mrs Carole Galbacki. That's who I hope to be. That's all I want and need to be."

Simon's cheeks lit up with blush as he looked off to the side. "It's only been three months and you're thinking about marriage, jeez-"

"You'd been cursing in shock if you knew the other things I plan in my head when I have the chance to think about anything other than school heh"

Suddenly Mrs Galbacki came through the old door. Her skinny frame casting a shadow across the floor. Carole jumped a little but the woman didn't look angry.

"It's late, you can use the guest room again Carole."
