Sou Hiyori and Midori’s Relationship

Hello everybody! I’m new to this website and frankly this entire blogging thing so please excuse my mistakes and awkward writing. I’d appreciate it if you comment your thoughts on this topic! Just a little warning, this article will contain spoilers for the visual novel “Your turn to die” otherwise known as “Kimi ga shine”. 

As you can tell by my username and profile picture, the original Sou Hiyori is an interest of mine therefore I have an interest in Shin Tsukimi as well. I think they are both very interesting characters and their dynamic was what motivated me to finish playing the game. They seem to be a popular yet problematic pair in the fandom. I want to know what kind of relationship they had before the death game.

I think it’s quite obvious that their relationship was romantic to an extent, whether it was one-sided or not. I think that especially from Midori’s perspective, it certainly feels romantic. People seem to forget that Midori doesn’t break humans because he views himself as superior, or because he’s simply bored. He loves humans. It’s a huge part of his character. His love for humans is what makes him break them. He admires them. He’s also very focused on Shin out of all his previous “victims”. He has pictures of him, wrote poems about him, and even made an AI of him (which he seems to cherish by the way). He has mentioned before in a deleted scene and in an in-game scene that nobody understands his “affection” towards Shin. He literally comments on Shin’s death by saying that he wanted to kill him himself. Midori views Shin as the object of his affection. He’s very possessive of him as well.

Sou’s side on the other hand…I’m not quite sure of. Sou is an unreliable narrator. You could take his words and believe that he viewed Midori as a “big brother” but I think that part is false. He said that when Sara asked him about the consent form (memory game section). At that point of time, Sou had completely lost any kind of trust he had for Sara. Also, he didn’t really specify what his wish was, which makes me believe that almost everything he said was false. The AI of Shin also hesitated before deciding to label Midori as a “scary friend“ of his. Shin seemed to be incredibly betrayed when he found out Midori was kind of using him for the AI. While you could be betrayed if really anyone did that to you, romantic relationships are seen as the most serious ones. 

Also I’d like to add a little theory(?) of my own, I believe that they both lived together. Shin’s parents spoiled him, maybe to the point where they’d let him do whatever he wants. When we’re discussing the memories, it’s seen that Shin has so many of his belongings at Midori’s house and probably stayed there after his death. This little part also supports the fact that they were probably in a romantic relationship. 

The entire third chapter is just them acting like exes anyways. Au revoir!!
