Speculations on Archibald Still Life and Theories

Hello my friends. While rewatching the Backrooms movie I had a thought…

The still lives we’re presented in the movie all make sense except for Archibald. You might know him simply as “lamp guy” since his name may not be widely known. In fact, I don’t even know where people got that name from. I’ve yet to find out. 

Anyways, as I was saying, in the movie we see Pirate Clark (who is a direct still life of Clark himself), the red-haired lady (who is HEAVILY implied to be Clark’s wife) and the bearded man. Although we don’t know for sure who the bearded guy is, he still fits in the same category as the others mentioned, in the sense that he looks like a modern man, based on the way he’s dressed. 

Now, Archibald is the outlier. He’s from a different time period altogether! He’s theorised to be from Victorian times judging by his outfit. I like to ponder about who the real Archibald was.

His name, Archibald Leland Sutter, forms the acronym ALS which stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a condition that at some point of its progression will leave you wheelchair-bound. That explains the wheelchair.

So was he a Victorian-age gentleman with ALS who, for some reason, was remembered by the backrooms? He seemed like a well-off man, so was he wealthy? I wonder, did he have a family? A wife and children before his affliction started making it worse for him? To what age did he live? And so on and so forth… It’s great fanfiction material. Maybe I’ll boot up AO3 again…
