This morning, because today I have school off, I decided to watch the backrooms movie, and I honestly didn't think it was very good. It was just kind of stale? It started good, but lacked any sort of conclusion at all, it wasn't really a horror movie.
At first it was really cool. The cinematography was absolutely stunning, I actually really loved how this movie looked. The movie is set in the early 90's, and it looks a lot like a movie from that time just with higher camera quality. I feel like its kinda rare nowadays to get an actually colorful, and cool looking horror movie that doesn't have a gray filter slapped over it (god I miss technicolor). It was also very intriguing. There was a lot of mystery, and I was excited to see how everything wrapped up, as well as seeing the characters become more developed/fleshed out, but that never happens. The scariest part of this movie was watching the run time slowly get shorter as I slowly realized I wasn't going to get a single explanation to wtf is going on.
It's like Kane had a really good script for a movie, then halfway through it he realized he didn't have the time or money to execute it, and started to just rush the story. Clark is such an interesting guy, why didn't his character get more rounded out???? And why the fuck does the memory version of himself just randomly kill him at the end? The only thing that I think might make sense is that his therapist was worried he might hurt/kill himself, and so his memory self manifested that. We also never have anything about the backrooms explained to us! Why are there these weird memory people there, why is an MRI company studying it, where did it come from? WHY DOES NOTHING GET EXPLAINED!?!?
overall id give this movie a 4.5. It had a lot of potential, but went nowhere.

The movie being categorized as 'horror' doesn't make sense to me, I mean I guess it counts as psychological horror but overall it's more thriller or drama maybe.
if I'm being honest I think we're purposely not supposed to know the characters in depth, in the YouTube series it's found footage from many different people with one connection being the backrooms.
There are many things unanswered but they at least explain more of what the backrooms IS and how it keeps expanding.
It's a big hot bed for theories and questions.
