The roots of the punk movement: Part 1

The punk movement originated in England in the 1970s among unemployed and marginalized working-class youth; the most famous band since the emergence of punk is the Sex Pistols. Meanwhile, in Brazil—specifically in São Paulo—the band “Restos de Nada” was formed. This movement reached the United States in 1974 when regulars at CBGB in New York formed and supported bands aligned with the movement—one example that also embraced the philosophy of individuality and independence. From some perspectives, punk emerged to revive the rock of that era, as it featured short, danceable songs in the “Rocker” style (also known as “Greaser”). But since rock still had a tendency to create stars who, even when very famous, remained too distant from the audience, punk came along to change and revolutionize this by introducing a highly simplified musical style with little more than three chords—and musicians weren’t required to have any formal musical training. This was based on the principle that “anyone can start a band” and express themselves through music; it was like a 1970s-style DIY movement.

(PS: i wrote only a little bit because it's 3am and i'm sleepy, but the punk movement is a really huge subject to be explored! i'll write more about it tomorrow)
