Tips for curly hair?

I've been testing out new finishing techniques on my hair and found out it can actually be quite tame like this. The only problem is it doesn't pick up any volume and just stays pretty claggy. I really put the work in to separate the curls until they ended up like this, and it's decent enough, I suppose. I tried things like a pick comb and the fingers and the agony (Hotel Transylvania reference hehe), and my hair reacted differently each time because it's just not used to this approach. Anyone got any tips on how to make it a bit more unruly?
