Weekly Blog Post #2

Hello again!

This one's a bit late, but I've been cooking up a lot of stuff since last week! I've gotten a bit slower by the end, but I was zooming in progress at the start, so let's go over that stuff!

The Shopkeeper

Bit of an odd one to start off with, but one of my favourite side-projects so far!

The Shopkeeper is a bit of an older video of mine from about 3 months back, simulating one of my dream games in a sort of ENA fashion. I hadn't really uploaded many videos, but I thought that sorta thing would be perfect for this website!

If you haven't watched it yet, here it is below!

This video was originally made to test the waters of Godot and its 3D capabilities, and by how the video turned out, this little experiment worked really well! After this, I began to work on my new game Doohickeyotron made in the same engine.

Speaking of which, let's see how that's doing!

Doohickeyotron Dev Update - The Mechanicals

Last time I updated you guys, I was beginning the development of a new gameplay mechanic, the Console. After about a week of work, I'm happy to announce that it's basically complete!

This took a lot less time than I thought and definitely took a bit of work to get sorted properly, but I really like the turnout so far!

Now, for the Mechanicals.

The Mechanicals are what I call the puzzle pieces within the game. I didn't like to call them puzzle pieces as they didn't feel much like it with how they work with the Console, so I felt a much more technological name worked better.

They work using a new object called a Connector. The Connector takes the signal from the console output (if the code is right) and will send it to its designated mechanical, allowing it to run.

However, there is also the Inhibitor. The Inhibitor does basically the same thing as the Connector, except when it takes the signal, it instead halts the designated mechanical from running.

Apart from those two, the main Mechanicals that I've been working on are the Door and the Moving Platforms.

The Door is a pretty simple one that opens and closes based on the Connector power. I'd show the animations for it, but they're done within Godot, not Aseprite.

The Platform on the other hand is a MUCH more complex system. It was originally going to be a pretty simple one of go from A to B, but I wanted to give myself as much customisation so that when it comes to creating new levels with it, I can easily implement them with all the specifics I want.

Here's a read on how the whole thing works. (warning, it's long)

Nerd talk out of the way, I actually have some gameplay that I'd like to show of this stuff working, take a look!

Song from the DONKS OST

It's a bit rough right now, but it'll be polished overtime to be even more enjoyable!

That's about everything to do with Doohickeyotron for now, still writing up different stuff and adding more weird mechanics while I wait for the new UI to be done, can't wait for you guys to see it!

The Misc Part Where I Talk About Other Things That Are Going On

Mini Game Review - Buddy Simulator 1984

Recently while thinking up new game ideas, I was told by a friend of mine that an idea sounded really similar to this game, we had tried to look for it for a bit only to realise that it was already in my steam library!

I'm currently almost 3 hours in so far and I'm finding it really fun so far! On startup I actually realised that the beginning sequence is very similar to the Console, so seeing a game this well received with a similar mechanic to something I was a bit conscious about has given me a bit more hope for that mechanic.

Overall though, I love the switch of styles! The game takes a lot of things into account upon your first time playing and uses that throughout the rest of your experience. The switch between text to 2D to 3D is also so cool!

It's a really neat game that I'd recommend checking out if you can.

Random ramble about scary minecraft horror mod

Ok a bit of a random one, but the update for untitled.log is (supposedly) coming out this week and I would HEAVILY encourage people to check it out if they can. I've seen a lot of teasers for it so far along with handful of gameplay footage & it's genuinely one of the best mods I've ever seen.

For a mod as big as this, I'm really surprised that it's only been in development for 2 months, but I'd really recommend checking it out when it drops, it has some insane gameplay mechanics that I didn't even know were possible within Minecraft.

Song of the Week

This blog's song of the week isn't exactly one, but multiple within one, and that's Titan Suite with Lyrics by MaimyMayo & a whole bunch of other people.

I originally saw this from a couple animations on Twitter and was curious about the whole thing and OH MY GOD. Literally from the first 5 seconds I'm met with the most beautiful vocals I've ever heard in a fan lyrics video.

The entire thing is absolutely incredible, I would heavily recommend listening to it.

Anyways, that's about it from me this week, hope you all had fun reading!
