I'll be updating this list as I post bulletins about them. Here are some of the inclusion criteria I have for this project. The entries here do not use AI. In general, the entries should be projects that are not linked with large for-profit organizations. If possible, I'd like to avoid forums (unless they're built around creating some kind of useful project). As a US-based person, I can't attest to the utility of these resources outside of the US.

Advocacy/ Journalism:

Resources here are useful to readers who want to learn more about their communities and spread that information around. 

MuckRock

Muckrock is a nonprofit collaboration between journalists and community organizers. It creates an easy avenue to send FOIL and FOIA requests to your local government. As an added bonus, you can search all requests that have been sent via MuckRock. Their goal is to make requesting, analyzing and sharing government information easier. By doing so they hope to make politics more transparent and democracy more informed.

Dirty Little Zine is a website that you can use to print your own 8-page folding zines on a regular printer. Very cool. Very punk.

SOS Brutalism

SOS Brutalism is a project dedicated to cataloging and advocating for brutalist architecture around the world. They have this nifty map that lets you check and see if there's brutalist structures in your area. If you're a big fan of "concrete monstrosities" like I am, you're going to love this site.

Skyscraper Page

Finally, a place on the internet where people who love tall buildings can come together and talk about skyscrapers. This website has been active since 1997 and features over 85,000 uniform drawings aiming to represent individual buildings to scale. According to this site, it took hundreds of volunteer illustrators to create this database.

4chan's Art/Critique Board (/ic/)

The Political Graveyard

This strange little website has been around since 1996 and claims to be the most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 338,260 politicians, living and dead. Odds are, if you wanted to learn about prominent early politicians in your home town, this would be the place to do it.

FMHY is a well maintained directory of free online media sources. It includes hundreds of links to pirate the world's media. If you're looking for books, courses, movies, digital tools, and just about any other digital file-- this is a good place to look.

Anna's Archive

Anna's Archive is the largest shadow library ever assembled. It contains all the files from Sci-Hub, as well as the books from Libgen. As of 02/24/26, Anna's Archive is in big trouble with Spotify for having downloaded their entire music library. Anna's Archive has said its objectives are to "catalog all the books in existence." But they seem happy to archive just about anything. I recommend checking out their  Wikipedia page for a full brief on Anna's Archive.

Every noise is a graphical music discovery system. It allows you to scroll endless sub-genres in a way that makes sense.

Clicking a genre plays the dead middle of a song, almost like scrolling the radio dial. It's one of the best ways to explore new genes of music.

Money Gratis is a website by electronic artist, Moby. It features a ton of free, high quality songs you can use for any reason except for promoting meat and dairy and/or right wing politics.

Maps:

This is a dump of map-based projects for people who like to create and view maps. These resources can be incredibly useful in the right hands. Nothing is more democratizing and pluralistic than a map.

Terraink

Love those high-end looking posters of cities and towns? Have you ever thought about making one that centers on the place you first kissed your now-partner or your first apartment? Terraink is a site that uses OpenStreetMap data and nice pre-designed palates to make fancy-looking maps of where-ever you want. Just pop in some GPS coordinates and you're selling fancy maps on Etsy.

Repair:

Big corps want you to be stuck in an endless loop of buying new crap. If you want to fix your old crap, escape the hedonic treadmill, and save cash with your elbow grease- this is the section for you.

iFixit

iFixit is a one-stop website that shows tear-downs of popular electronics and tells you how to diagnose, repair, and order parts for those electronics. iFixit is a purveyor of tools and replacement parts for most of the products available on that site. So if you've got a newish cellphone that isn't working properly, you can order replacement parts and the tools to fix said phone right on that site. It's one of the best resources on the net for this particular task. Kudos to BootlegFriend for reminding me to add the repair section and specifically about this resource.

This is meant to be a general dump for gaming-related websites.

noclipdotwebsite is a digital museum of video game levels. It renders video game levels in the browser and lets you fly around at whatever pace you want. It includes NPCs and sometimes items that would have been in the environment as well. This is a great tool for recording little environmental videos or just for exploration. You can also download the source code on github, which is a neat feature.

These are projects that utilize wikis from around the web. Currently as of 2026 they include projects utilize information freely available on Wikipedia. In the future I hope to add projects that use wiki-protocols more generally.
