THE IDEA OF YOU
This film is such a beautiful and sentimental film that I couldn't wrapped my head around the fact that this film has such a low rating on Letterboxd. It's visually appealing while also delivers a message that is very important and also very relatable to me. Jesse Eisenberg's directorial debut was nothing short of impressive, and after watching this one and A Real Pain, I am seated for anything this man has to offer. So lets talk about it
This film revolves around one idea, that being, the reason behind we love someone. Do we love them for who they are, or do we love the idea of them? Because often times, we idolized the idea of them instead of what is present with us at the moment. Why do we idolized the idea of them? Who knows, but my answer for that question, is the fact that the significant person offers something we dont/couldnt have. But while I said that the film revolved around one idea, they expanded into something much more fresh and complicated.
Told through mom and son relationship, played by both Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard, we follows Ziggy and Evelyn as they both gone through the question I have proposed before. While Ziggy went down a much more traditional approach, Evelyn faced something that I found very refreshing.
With Ziggy, perhaps the question and the idea was being presented in a very clear way. The narrative revolved around Ziggy trying to be political in order to impress his crush, Lila. But ultimately, he failed because he missed the whole point of Lila's poem. To me, what Ziggy always tried to achieve is validation. And that was shown through his live-streams while he was playing music, and when his 20.000 followers wasn't enough to fill that void, to chase that validation is the fact that his parents doesnt recognized his efforts in arts. His mom literally kind of mocked him on one of the scene.

Evelyn on the other hand, followed a narrative that is quite the same with Ziggy's, but this time with a rather unusual pair. Which what really caught my attention, because I just dont noticed it on other films. When her only son grows up to be someone that perhaps, is different from what was she expecting, Evelyn turns to Kyle, a new tenant. Kyle would later serves as this "second opportunity" to Evelyn. Not quite a replacement, but in a sense trying to make a path for him, a better path she thought. But ultimately, like Ziggy, she failed in doing so.
With Evelyn, I think what she is after, is the idea of her own son. When her own son became something different than what she expect, she becomes desperate when Kyle walked to her life. Or maybe, when she walked to his life. She is trying to construct a dream path, an ideal version of life for Kyle, in order to fulfill her own "what ifs." She essentially forgets that, the thing with growing up you're bound to change. Her own son is bound to change.

That's why I think the film revolved around the idea of idolization when you're in love. Because when you idolized the idea of someone, you start to become desperate, and you are bound to be disappointed when they didnt aligned with the fiction that you've made up in your own mind. Whether it's Ziggy's quest of validation or Evelyn's search for a second opportunity, none of them resolved it at the end of film, by perhaps fulfilling each other's void.
This film has a special place in my heart. It's a nice little cozy emotional film. The visual in this film is also very appealing, which I couldn't really described how they were, so you have to see it for your own.
