wind

Clearly, it isn’t me. I know that. I didn’t think the wind up. I was there. I mean, I was there earlier, sitting in my living room drinking coffee , and I heard my wind chimes. Then I heard my neighbor’s glass wind chimes out front.

They’re so delicate. Every time the wind picks up, I think they’re about to break into pieces. It’s all these little pieces of glass clanking into each other. But somehow, they don’t break. They must be arranged just right. Maybe they’re made out of some really hard glass. I don’t know. I don’t know anything about wind chime glass. But even when the wind gets going pretty hard, they just knock around together and stay whole. Seems strange.

Anyway, I heard the wind in the trees today. It was going pretty good. The branches were moving. The leaves were moving. Or maybe I was moving the trees with my mind. No, I know. Clearly, I wasn’t.

But for a second, you know, the trees are moving, your mind is moving, the wind is moving, and it all gets mixed together. It becomes difficult to say what is moving what. Anyway. Wind. It’s quiet. It’s everywhere. Even when it isn’t.

I read a story once where there wasn’t any wind until somebody moved a fan, and then the fan made the wind. So I guess the wind is everywhere, provided you have a fan. I’m sitting there quietly in my living room, and I can barely hear the chimes anymore. No wind. Unless the fan is on.

Wind is cool, though. I like it. As long as it doesn’t go too fast. Five miles an hour seems about right. I think that’s probably the maximum amount of wind anybody actually needs. Fourteen miles an hour? I don’t know. I might not go outside.

I think the different winds have names. Gusts. Gales. Things like that. The wind gets stronger, and eventually we start naming it because now it has become a thing more than the wind. But today was good. Just enough.

A breeze, I guess. Just enough to take some of the heat off. Just enough to move the trees around a little bit. Just enough. It’s nice.

Sometimes it gets crazy, though. I heard somewhere that wind is the Earth trying to even out its temperatures. Warm air over here, cold air over there, and the whole planet trying to move things around until everything balances out.

I don’t know whether that’s completely true. It could be. I like the idea, though. The Earth trying to even itself out.

And I am just sitting here drinking coffee, listening to it happen.
