ipods and walkmans (walkmen?)

Back to Web & Tech

i've been really interested in walkmans lately. i stumbled across some of their really cool mid-2000s to early 2010s designs, and while i see that they generally have less space than ipods, i'm still curious about what it's like to use them everyday. the sticks especially look super fun, as well as the e series.

in terms of sound quality and functionality, how do they compare to ipods? i see some older models require an app on the user's computer to transfer media, were they easy to use? and is there a particular model you think is best or worst? i want to save up for one, but am not sure which one i really want.

are they left searching for me in eternity?

Haven’t had an iPod, but my Sony Walkman e407 has some pretty good sound quality is pretty good

The only thing is you’d need to download smth like jsymphonic (I wouldn’t recommend using sonicstage if you have more modern software)

The setup is relatively easy once you actually figure it out, for mine it took a bit because im a wee bit stupid

The storage size is quite small but my suggestion would just be to compress the songs so they take up less space

@kaseyslider aaaa cool! that one is one of my faves in terms of design, i like how metallic it is. how much do you usually compress the songs, if you don't mind me asking? and thank you for responding :D

@siopao you're welcome!
i usually have to compress mp3s to around 80 or 96 kbps with audacity before uploading it, that usually takes up way less space then it would otherwise while still sounding good

i haven't had any walkmans yet,, but i have had 2 ipods so far!! 🎶

they're pretty good in functionality as one as you get one you like the most,, such as a nano, touch, or original!

 i prefer the touch as it has a camera and the touch interface is very appealing to use imo!! you can also use the touch as a digicam as long as you have the storage for it!! 😋

the nano is great as well but i have the 1st generation,, which was quickly discontinued due to it being very prone to scratching,, as well as the battery life being very bad (which i can see..)

but i've also seen some very cool walkman designs,, which i want to get in the near future!! i've seen the 2005 sony nw-e505,, which i think is pretty cool!! my friend has a nw-ws413 which is quite new i believe,, it's an mp3 player as earbuds!! i've heard they are waterproof but only have 4gigs of storage,, 😓

overall if it was my opinion i would pick ipods,, they're much more aesthetic in my opinion (disregarding the competition they have in my brain with the nw-e505..) they're good with storage,, and they have cool color options!! 🌈

but if you're going for more versatility i would say a walkman,, they have more designs!! if you want high storage i would recommend looking for some with micro sd card capabilities,, like the nw-wm1am2!!

if you would also like another option i would also recommend a 3ds!! they have more functionality imo,, you can play games,, use it as a camera (though the quality isn't good,, 😓) and you can have storage options with either an sd card if it's an orig. model,, or a micro sd if it's a new model!! 😋

@nathan !! 🌀 ooooo which ones do you have? :? i have a nano gen 3 (silver) and 5 (blue), and a classic gen 2. the nano gen 3 is my daily driver, but i've been meaning to find a firewire for a while now for the classic one. and i've been looking at the ipod touches for a while, love all the colors they come in... and i agree, the nw-e505 is super cool! also the mp3 player as earbuds is interesting...

i didn't know some of the walkmans came with micro sd capabilities, that's awesome. i'll definitely look into that~ thank you!!! ^^

(speaking of the 3ds. portable consoles in general back then were capable of so much more... i have a vita rn, and being able to listen to music or look at photos and maybe even email (dunno if it actually still works rn) is so awesome. on top of being able to play games, like you mentioned. i have been thinking about saving up for a ds for a while, actually. maybe i will!)

@siopao i have a nano 1st gen (black) and 3rd gen (pink) and my ipod touch is 3rd gen i believe? maybe 2nd gen, but the battery is fried so i would need to get a replacement to see 😓

@nathan !! 🌀

I have an ipod touch 2, it doesnt have a camera and it's so sad i can't download games on it or use youtube </3

Even the ipod touch 3 or 4 have texting and call capabilities, if i had either id probably stop using my phone tbh

I personally have an iPod myself, being a Nano 2nd Gen.

It is relatively easy to use, just download whatever music from YouTube or something, then go and install iTunes, set it up, then go ahead and put your MP3s or something on the playlists or something, sync it, and then you can listen to your music on your iPod!

Although for Walkmans, I don't own any at the moment, but I would want one that is just a portable AM/FM/Cassette player or a CD Player, not an MP3 Player from Sony (since I already got my iPod).

@shell that's cool! i have a 3rd and and 5th gen nano, and a 2nd gen classic. haven't been able to get a firewire for the classic yet, tho.

i'm also sort of interested in their physical media players, there's so many! but i don't think it would be convenient to use in my day-to-day life. most of them time when i listen to cds nowadays, i just break out my ps3 lolz.
