I just got into Vocaloid but I don't know much about it. Can anybody tell me anything I should know about what Vocaloid is or the fanbase?
Vocaloid is a music genre based on hologram instruments from the voices of singers. One thing I recommend taking to heart however is that there is a vocaloid named Kaai Yuki who was recently put in songs that should have not been made with her voice bank since she has an underage voice bank. Try to stay away from songs that look suggestive with her & try -- in my opinion -- to stay away from a lot of the newer Teto & Miku song duets. They are very bad and very weird to listen to and watch. They are just popular for clout. I hope you enjoy the genre however. My favorite vocaloids are gakupo & Luka besides miku :)

I was into vocaloid since i was in elementary school! lots of things have changed, but i’m still sorta stuck in the past -.- i was around for talkaloids, personality traits and a family feeling between the characters! i recommend the vocaloid office youtube vids and “the kagamines get along” videos for the nostalgic vibe! my favs are rin, luka and v4 flower! my fav songs are “demon girlfriend” and anything by wonderful opportunity! they’re are so many corners of vocaloid to explore, so there isn’t one set way to do it!
Most important thing is to listen to whatever you like! If you wanna quickly find lots of good songs, I would absolutely recommend Project Diva on steam or Project Mirai DX if you have a 3DS! They're both fantastic and filled with so many classics. Once you find songs you like in those, you can look further into the producers of those songs too!
About what they are and the fanbase, Vocaloids and their characters are merely voices and dolls to be placed in any song or scenario you like for your creative work. They dont have a set canon, their canon is whatever you want them to be for your project. For example for some songs, Rin and Len are lovers, for some songs they are siblings, for some songs Miku and Rin are lovers, for some songs all characters are just regular friends.
A lot of people in the modern vocaloid community have a weird sense of self absorbed moral superiority over how to correctly use vocaloids so be careful of those people and never fall into the same mindset, they are tools and digital voices, not real people so harassing real people over them is extremely immature.
But yeah, just listen to whatever you like and you'll have the best time! Personally love and absolutely recommend Tokyo Teddy Bear, Romeo and Cinderella, Meltdown and Kagerou Daze!

Ive only really got into vocaloid a couple years ago.. but since then ive loved Megurine Luka! and i'm stull unsure if she counts, but Kasane Teto and Eleanor Forte are probably my favorites.. I also LOVE inabakumori's Kaai Yuki!!
Ive also made a couple songs.. and knowing how they're made makes me appreciate the whole culture and vocaloid songs even more!!
