i was the person who requested the board so i actually saw it the moment it was posted and just hesitated on what to say for my very long first post loooool. i have heard a lot about house of leaves and it has like the most mixed reviews i have ever seen. sadly it is not a genre i think i'd like or i'd throw my own two cents in.

oh for sure, the book is probably one of the most polarizing things ever written. alot of its quirks can be chalked up to just it needing a specific audience, because if it were any other book, theyd be errors or just bad writing (but alot of House of Leaves as a book entrenches on things breaking expectation and they arent meant to confine. its meant to be like that)

i think if you like your art to challenge you as a consumer, you will adore the book

i agree with that so much, the message of like, we create our own monsters, and how that also parallels Johnny, it was so well done in a way that deeply unsettled me

yes, the characters all did their purpose so well, each one fascinated me, and i think people absolutely discredit Johnny's portions just because they cant get over shock value

yes totally agree with the self-made troubles! i see a lot of people complaining that johnny distracts from the 'main story' but i feel like the story works so much better with the 3(ish) points of view. in the way that the house is filtered through so many mediums, people's opinions and worldviews i feel like it adds to the theme of perception..

also! have you heard of the book 'S' by doug dorst? ive yet to start it but its a mixed media book kind of like HoL. it's a similar kind of 'found media's thing. It's a library book and 2 people  have conversations by annotating in the margins each time they take it out. there's also extra documents that come with it.... very involved book but seems maybe relevant:D

you're 100% right on that view, each character is a different progression of the same idea, of getting lost in that labyrinth of their heads, and all of them falter to their own obsessions and habits that destroy everything around them (Navidson with his house causing him to nearly lose his family, Johnny with the transcript causing him to lose all of his friends and not even know Lude passed away)

i havent heard of it! im a sucker for all kinds of ergodic literature though, aswell as just odd narration perspectives, i will absolutely search for it and see what i think. thank you for the reccomendation!!

it makes me a bit sad when i see other readers express their frustrations with House of Leaves, but then again, i remind myself that alot of the book encompasses around frustrating you, as i've always interpreted its ergodic nature as making the book itself act like a labyrinth, and of course its a reflection of the maze like nature of the house too

@Jonothan I hope my comment didn't come off as frustration! I meant it in a good way, the mind bending nature of the book was truly one of the most enjoyable parts of it for me!

much agreed, theres something so perfect in how it used its medium. you couldnt capture how this book feels on an e-reader, and given how difficult itd be to ever adapt House of Leaves into a book, it really is so one of a kind. i usually equate reading it to the literary adaptation of a maze

also YES, all House of Leaves fans should run to listen to Haunted, Poe is an amazing musician and it adds so much to House of Leaves
