I’m currently trying to learn a few languages soon—ASL, Spanish, and Korean—but I wanted to know any techniques to learn the right basics and anything that could help me improve quicker. Anyone bilingual or multilingual that can help?
I know you hear it a lot but immersion is one of the best methods you can use to learn a language, and probably the best.
When it comes to learning a language, I found that Namjoon from BTS's story flipped a switch in my brain for this. He has one of the best Korean to English speaking skills and accent I've heard.
To summarize, he watched Friends in English with Korean subtitles. Then, he watched it again in English with English subtitles, and finally, he watched it a third time in English with no subtitles.
You can do this with shows that are not Friends, obviously. I would keep a couple of things in mind though.
1. Avoid shows with lots of jargon specific to worldbuilding or otherwise. Despite if they are good shows or not, do not use shows like Grey's Anatomy, House MD, etc that have lots of jargon related to a specific topic which will overload you with jargon not related to your language. Similarly, I wouldn't reccomend a show with lots of world building jargon and conversation surrounding the world.
2. Sitcoms are actually better for this, as they surround real world scenarios, and are typically centered around day to day life, and realistic plot which is casual and conversational. These are conversations you would have in real life.
watch kid's shows in your language to get the basics down!! some can be entertaining and use simple words that you may not already know/may need to review :3
