when people use larp instead of poser it really grinds my gears. like if you don't like using poser just say performative. it worked for the whole performative male thing. i understand how it probably started getting used, assuming it started with "oh he's live action roleplaying as a metalhead" but i don't know.
Lol. Poser is much nicer word to say and hear. It means exactly what it implies: someone is "posing" as something else. (pretending to be something they're not)

It's usually used for bootlickers. Kinda like glazing.
But "larping" sounds like either a very messy way of eating/licking or reminds me of grease. 😭
Let's just keep using the word poser. It's cleaner.

makes me mad as someone who has interacted with actual LARPers, like "live action role play" LARPers, some of the most joyous whimsical people you will ever meet, and now people on the internet are changing the definition because they just collectively forgot the word "poser"

Was gonna say exactly this; Larping in and of itself is something distinct with a big community and culture and it sucks that this word is now watered down and always associated with negative shit. A lot of my irls partake in reenactments and stuff n they’re some of the most passionate people about history I know lol. like…what are we even going to call real larpers now?!

People chose 'larp' probably because it rolls off the tongue better for parody names of YouTubers. There's probably not that much difference—maybe? Like, is Posiplier/Markiposer any better than Larpiplier? But that's my guess.
I also don't understand the ick people have toward this usage. We can change what it means to be a woman to include males who haven't even transitioned as valid, but using the word 'larp' like this is too much?
Online communities can use any assortment of words in any way they like, but 'larping' is gross and too far? Given my assumption of LGBTQ advocacy online, people really don't have any place criticizing how 'larping' is used by others when a community like this transforms and uses words differently all the time.
It's just a little hypocritical to me.
@Asterisk difference here is that it's been proven by peer-reviewed studies that gender is in the brain, not the genitals, so "males who haven't transitioned yet" are in fact women by virtue of having a woman's brain. that's not changing the definition of the word just because people feel like it, it's updating the definition now that science has proven there's holes in the old one.
larping, on the other hand, is an already maligned hobby for being "cringe"/for manchildren ("it's just dress up") and now there's this new association with it on top of that. people in the larp hobby are often neurodivergent as well and most of us have learned to mask at some point or another, so to equate the hobby with being a poser/faker/actor has some uncomfortable associations. there's kind of a lot more layers to it than you'd expect.
@mallrat I'm not trying to dismiss you here, I get why it'd rub you the wrong way. But I just think the double standard is unfair.
You said the gender thing was science-driven, not just people changing words for fun. But that science isn't nearly as settled as you're making it sound, and the language shift happened before most people even knew about the studies. It was community-driven first — which is fine, that's how language works. But you can't say yours was "legit" and theirs is "cringe" when both came from people just using words how they wanted.
And yeah, I get that one is a community defining itself and the other is an outsider borrowing a hobby name, it's not the same thing. But online slang borrows from everywhere — "camping," "gaslighting," "triggered" all got stretched way past their original meanings. Nobody owns a word forever.
I'm not saying you can't push back on it. I'm saying the reaction to "larp" feels way stronger than how other repurposed words get treated, and right now it's coming from a community that repurposes a ton of words. That's all I'm saying.
oh my GOD i hate this with every inch of my soul. its like destroying a super cool niche community (LARPers) to insult people who most of the time are doing absolutely nothing wrong. sure i get the concept, but poser is RIGHT THERE.
but yk, it happens, new slangs wont stop coming out and everyone will either love it or hate it. same thing happened with cringe, for example.
however nothing will ever give me more satisfaction than being able to say poser with my full chest idfc about "larping" <3

FR!! usually I try not to let new generation terms and slang bother me since it’s a tale old as time. I remember my older sister hating “noob” for the longest time, but in reality terms change, shorten, or become new things altogether. Think of the term “cap” or “capping”. Or better yet a more common term, gaslighting. They’re got a solid term and meaning and at least don’t take from their original words. HOWEVER the use of LARP is on this entire level of unnecessary for how it’s being used.
It’s not something simple being repurposed for another meaning and it’s not a silly new word. LARP actively STANDS for something and has been around for far too long to be scrapped down to meaning something entirely against its origin like?? Live Action Role Play. How’d we turn that into being a poser or a fraud in a community? Now it’s just a poor way to try and bother people in fandoms and meekly excuse them of their knowledge and take away from actual live action roleplayers, like DND, ren faires, etc. Lord it bothers me to no endddd

Poser was OUR word (baby Millennial here!) It'll always trump larp because larp is meant mostly for people who take D&D too seriously and poser just hits different! It doesn't matter what you're into, poser hits your core vs larp people can be like oh I never played D&D in my whole life. js

I agree. im getting sick of the excuse of language evolving every time a new slang term comes up that completely changes the definition of an already existing word, especially when EVERYONE was using a word that actually fits just a couple years ago. Not the biggest deal I guess but it's just annoying
