What are the most annoying types of comments on fanfics?

Back to Books & Writing

Whether you write fanfiction or you are just a reader who reads comment sections, what types of comments do you find the most annoying?

In my opinion, it's the ones who rush authors to update, especially right after a new chapter is published. :S

I also dislike it when others bring up other shows in the comments section. It distracts me from the discussion about the fic and the media it's writing about.

its so annoying how many people recently in comments have been really aggressive with wanting the author to be faster with posting and the people who give unwanted criticism or the people who instead of giving actual criticism they r jst really negative

its so upsetting bc fanfic writers r doing this out of their own free will, like its jst a hobby and ppl like that in comments are making a lot of authors not want to write or jst feel really upset

@rozlennon

Totally understand that. 😔

The update rushers act like fic writers are writing factories, who can pump out chapters every day. Some people clearly need to train their patience.

And the unwanted criticism... It depends. I appreciate attentive readers. But I also see why some are a problem bc some of them come to a fic and just spill out their negativity in the shape of a comment.

Instead of:

MC should be more careful with her choices. She looks like she's putting herself in danger.

It's something like:

MC is such a dumb bitch! >:(

Author, fix this rn!

@Ina

yea when people tend to give criticism (especially unwanted ones) they tend to be like , “hey i hate *thing*” without trying to be nice about it or say what to do instead jst 1 negative like i feel like criticism should be more like “hey i liked this fic but i didnt like *thing* maybe instead you could *another thing*” it jst feels like they expected the author to be a professional or a robot who’s perfect instead of jst som1 who wants to write some stuff and its nice to want to help som1 improve but youre not helping them improve if you dont give actual advice with it

When they say smt like "Omg where's *popular ship* you should add it!* Or *I don't ship it...* Like nobody cares🫩 why did you read it then😭

@Solanum

Yeah. That sucks.

I genuinely think some people click on a fic merely on vibes instead of its premise and tags. 🥲

probably people forcing the author to continue their work, i think people forget that the author can do whatever they want with the fanfics they write. they can delete it, discontinue it, go on a hiatus etc etc. its not published literature where you have to write an ending

@amber

From a reader's perspective, I understand why some people truly do not want a fanfic to be abandoned, but I don't think I've ever seen readers forcing authors to continue writing. That sounds pretty bad, especially with how people behave online. :/

Discontinuing a fic is better than deleting it tbh. The fic doesn't have to become lost media.

The worst comment you can get is no comment at all♥️ <--- lying.

I HATE those entitled commenters that are like rushing the author and complaining about how long it takes for the author who is writing FOR FREE and almost always has a job or schoolwork to update the fanfic that they are writing for fun and have No Obligation to finish.

Also those people that complain about the content of the fanfic itself. Tags are there for you to Read! Why would you read something you KNOW you wouldn't like just to complain about it in the comments.

@Andrew

Exactly. The people who rush the author are probably putting them off writing.

And tags? Trust me when I say that a lot of people don't read the tags, no matter what platform they're on. Even if they do read them, some users probably still won't have a clear idea of what the fic will actually entail or how the author will touch on certain subjects. This can leave a bad impression, even if they have read fics with similar tags before.

Fan fiction writer here! I only dont like getting forceful requests. Example : "Write blorbo1/blorbo2 pregnancy next". Like no offence, but im not gonna do that. I really only write when IIII have an idea. I dont like hate comments on other people's work, but I love them on mine. I hang them all on my wall. I like to evoke emotion, even if the emotion is negative.

tucker, he/him

I totally dislike the ones rushing authors, or putting their want for more chapters before appreciating the fact that there is chapters at all!

To spread some positivity as well, I love comments referencing something that happened in the chapter, or even previous chapters. The biggest W is when they mention notes/past notes.

rushing the author fs or telling them how to continue their own story. like dude if u want it so bad just write it urself!!

complaining about the way an author decides to write THEIR story in a comment section is just weird.
