What online sites/apps simulate real life acrylic/oil painting the best?

Back to Art & Photography

Hello artsy aliens. I've been trying to transfer my real life acrylic and oil painting techniques, style, and aesthetic into a digital platform that can handle and best simulate those techniques and brushstrokes online. Links, website names, app recommendations, all appreciated. Thanks!

i'd say a good handful of art apps can simulate that: even the ones considered not very advanced or for baby artists (MS Paint [free ofc] and firealpaca [free] sometimes), those considered best for intermediate artists (firealpaca [free], krita [free], procreate [buy], ibis paint [buy]) to the ones considered more professional or the most advanced (clip studio paint [buy], photoshop [buy]). really, for the most part it's all about finding your way when it comes to drawing digital art, like, figuring out the brush settings, (especially) brush or image textures, and the program itself, to make your painting look more like traditional painting.

like i'm not kidding when i've seen wonderful paintings from the programs considered "not advanced" or "not for professionals/very experienced artists"... there's even speedpaints on youtube of people painting insane painting masterpieces on MS paint. though, it will be more easy to simulate traditional art on the programs for "intermediate" artists and the more advanced programs! i don't have much recommendations since i don't use digital art to imitate traditional art or to paint very often, but i do recommend getting to learn your choice(s) of art programs first (how it functions, buttons and all, since it can get really complicated!) before you focus on how much it can simulate traditional art! finding other art programs will also depend on what device you want to paint on, too--some art programs are specific for computers and others for mobile. goodluck!
