Back to Movies & TV

yayyy i like ouran highschool host club...

yes there are creepy parts of it and yes mizukuni is problematic and yes there is just a lot of homophobic "jokes" in it and yes the twins are incestual but have you considered i like the art style and its funny and super duper aesthetic and escapism anime...

if u find it hard to get past that stuff i 100% get it i did at first too but if u think you can turn a blind eye i would recommend you watch it

I LOVE OHSHC SO MUCH ITS SO GOOD I WISH THEY WPULD MAKE A SEASON 2 but the manga is sooo good too :D

how sensitive do ppl have to be?? ToT (i was raised watching big bang theory and home movies so ig i dont have a good idea of sensitive and insensitive tv shows TwT

@₊˚⊹ᰔ strawbiechan(˶˃⤙˂˶) ୭ ᵎᵎ bro whats his face literally tries to rape haruhi... all the girls have the hots for like it's like the 1000 year old dragon thing where they look exactly like a child but they're ACTUALLY a high school junior so it's not problematic... they drop the t slur MULTIPLE times like so many times...  i feel like its completely understandable if someone cant get past that stuff its gross

fwiw this anime was supposed to be satirizing other host club/reverse harem anime and i think a lot of viewers miss it because so much got lost in translation. i didn't really jive with it when i tried it back in the 00s but:

1. i distinctly remember that the twins' "forbidden romance" was an act they did because they could tolerate doing creepy fanservice since it paid really well. they had no interest in each other in reality. IIRC they always stopped short of actually kissing as well, just got really close to tease their fans since they're comfortable being in each others' personal space.

2. from the two books i read, mizukuni was not portrayed in a good light at any point. wasn't he blackmailing the main cast to let him stay in the host club as well? he had bad vibes all around and it was totally on purpose. i hated him.

3. honey is a very late bloomer (not even unrealistically so) so while he IS lampooning on shotacon tropes, he's also not in any icky situations since he's being doted on by peers. if this would have been a group of college seniors with a high school freshman i would have bristled, but since they're all at that awkward age where everyone's puberty happens at different times this gets a pass. also, i don't remember him being sexualized by the mangaka even though a lot of his classmates found him attractive. (he was also the "looks innocent but is actually terrifying" trope which was hilarious)

4. japan does NOT have the t slur and that was added in by american translators. in the 00s it was seen as mildly derogatory slang for "crossdressers." i'm not sure if there's a japanese slur there in the original but a lot of times, especially in the 00s, swearing was added to mark that a series was not for kids.

5. it might interest you to know that in the manga, haruhi insists on male pronouns and is strongly suggested to be gendervoid. he's actually not terrible rep of the nb crowd. (source: am fluid)
