What happened to halloween?

soooooo for the past 5+ halloweens ive had have not felt ANYTHING like halloween, i feel like everyone is losing spirit in holidays, or maybe im just growing up, idk i miss the show specials that would come out or the games that would get halloween updates like i was excited for halloween but now its just another day i feel like,

idk whats happening i think theres a chance halloween is still the same im just not seeing it bc i dont have children around me, but i feel like if the parents dont have spirit for that holiday than their child wont either, ik i cant do anything to really make halloween have that feel again besides sitting down and watching old vhs of halloween specials, but idk im only 16 i dont think im old enough to make halloween feel this way,

but this is only a theory. a holiday theory...

growing up probably has some factor in it, but I think it's at least partially everyone. last halloween, I heard a lot of people in my town say they barely had any trick or treaters at all compared to the previous ones

it's scary to think, but I'm a little suspicious that it has to do with kids being desensitized by having phones and modern social media while being so young. but maybe the lockdown also has something to do with it?? it's been a long time since then but it was still a huge cultural reset and it greatly influenced people to be more isolated, even after it was all over

I saw someone mention that it could also be people just not decorating as much as they used to. I remember houses would go all out with decorating and stores would decorate the entire place instead of just one section.

But I have hope and want to bring back the joy of Halloween again. I'm already planning to make D.I.Y decorations and I can't wait to get pumpkins soon.

this!! it literally feels as if the entire world is essentially "growing up"... and it's strange to see, halloween shouldn't die out this early in time.

also, i don't know if its just me, but i have this issue where i constantly seem to relate topics like this to global warming, despite it being off topic. the weather being 'in character' is still a MASSIVE attribute and thats actively worsening, though i also feel like that's just a component. people decorating with festive colors and warm lights is also seeming to wane away. all of the characteristics being discussed play a role, and its the fact that they're all being added on over time that makes it suck worse

I won't lie, there are still fun things that go on- but a lot of them are adult spaces now. There are no teen spaces anymore and I can for sure blame that on the people who ruin it for everyone else by acting a fool. But even the events that ARE welcoming of younger audiences are filled with adults for some reason and/or cost money to enter. Otherwise, you just have to know people I suppose. 

I also heavily believe trunk-or-treat contributed to this and just spread from there .. but I will say halloween is still a HUGE thing for the alternative community (of course). I'm planning on going to a local scene around this October since last year I couldn't do so- they always seem fun ! :3 they're also very welcoming spaces, so if you're looking for some there should be instagram pages. 

If anyone reading this is from NYC and would like to know more theres an instagram account @nysceneitlocal that often posts events like these at REALLY cheap prices ($20 and under). Unfortunately a lot of these events are still 18+ due to venue policies, but its a good start to find others. 

I'm sure part of it is growing up, I feel it too. 

buuuuuuuut, I think covid also played a part in it. i know people say everything different culturally now is bc of covid but genuinely it changed so much. Halloween is a very 'external' holiday with trick or treating, parties, outdoor decorations, haunted houses and stuff. and a lot of that got put on hold bc of covid and just hasn't come back to nearly the same amount as beforehand.

as someone from a big city on italy i remember often being the only kid for miles who dressed up and wanted to do trick or treating...no one does it here istg and it always made me so sad. 

the first time i actually celebrated was in uni when i lived in the uk and my friends amd i used to go to house parties and clubs in costumes :) i miss it sm
