hey!! I don't play DND, but I've wanted to play for god knows how long. I've been wanting to make a homebrew session that takes place in my friend's favorite show (Supernatural) for her birthday. IDK where to start though!! DX
Any advice from seasoned DND players is appreciated! I need to know what edition of DND I should get, what resources I need, how I should plan a storyline, and how stuff like NPCs and classes work... my IMs are also open if anybody wants to talk there abt it
A great way to get your players invested is with maps. If you are playing your sessions in person, I suggest you make some maps on dnd/rpg websites and print them out at home or at the library or somewhere. And if you are doing it online, then you can download your maps and put them into the website you're playing on. If that makes sense.
hello! if youre interested in playing ttrpgs, i actually dont reccomend starting with dungeons and dragons! its a very bloated rulebook (5e especially) and there's a cultural misconception that its the easiest ttrpg to homebrew for whatever type of game you want it to run. i would actually reccomend using a whole different system entirely, im not very familiar with supernatural but from what i know monster of the week would be a very fitting system for replicating the feel of the first few seasons of supernatural. its also a lot more beginner friendly with more compact rules and characters being easy to build. ill link the rulebook here, feel free to shoot me an IM if you have any other questions! https://online.anyflip.com/wltz/ylgh/mobile/index.html

simplest advice is learn the rules loosely, dont be afraid to improvise rules even if they seem unbalanced, and just focus on having fun. For making the homebrew story, just make sure to write a hook that you can rehearse since this is how you'll start their story, then think of their end goal, and a few points on how to reach their end goal. Anything in between can be improvised on the spot, since you're playing with friends dont worry about doing perfect roleplay or planning, this is just for you alone so make sure fun always comes first!
