Content being sorted by top kudos, or top comments, etc. results in a feedback loop that gives them more kudos and comments. This is fine at the very start, but shortly thereafter only a moderately initially interesting smattering of blogs will be stuck at the top page. To get new content to the top page will be too difficult after a short time, because of the "kudos/comments" canyon that new blogs won't be able to surpass to become seen and then given kudos/comments in the first place. The userbase is unlikely to grow rapidly without new and engaging content. So this is a core problem to solve early, to help minimize attrition, and stabilize the userbase.
I call this problem the "The Content Canyon", and thankfully I have a fix for it! :D
Proposed Fix:
At first an algorithm should be created to attenuate the rankings of top/comments/kudos posts based on their engagement score / age.
Even though I have designed the algorithm to be abuse resistant. I've decided against posting my proposed algorithm and reasonings for the associated weights here to prevent people from manipulating it smiliar to the saboteurs on spacehey. DM me for the example algorithm if you are interested. :D @Def3ct
Afterwards that algorithm can slowly increasingly penalize older content while looking at site metrics over time to better aproximate the sweet spot.
Most Kudos and Most comments blogs can still be a searchable feature so none of that needs to really go away persay. But this can help blogs bridge the content canyon. (I also have the solutions to the future smaller content canyons.)
This would open up a new "trending blogs" and "trending videos" sort style.
The only way these blog sorting features will provide both new and engaging content is to implement this or some variation of this. This also holds true for the videos section regarding sort by views/likes!
