I believe not every subculture in the alt community has to rely on politics
I also believe the debate over which song/band falls under which genre (like the "MCR isn't emo, they're blah blah blah) is stupid and a waste of time. People have become way too comfortable with policing music instead of taking the time to enjoy it.
@GL00MD4Y both points are so real tbh, like ofc some subcultures are related to politics (i.e. Punk mainly) but it doesn't have to be the root thing in every one, like emo and goth can just be its own thing, just to name two
also yeah, unless if they get the genre super wrong, idc if someone says a band is punk or emo or "mall emo" or whatever tf, feels like people would rather just complain and nitpick about music instead of just enjoying it
@Bakartridge goth is inherently political, have you ever done any research on it?

@Bakartridge no, goth and stuff is inherently political. it's meant to combat the conservative and traditional beauty standards and what is socially acceptable
why do u think that? what subcultures are u reffering to? left wing politics is fundamental to contrast all the nazis in the community
@GL00MD4Y I'd disagree with the first take mainly because like it or not we live in a world where politics is everything I fear. But also this might/is just be an opinion but when I think of anything alt subcultures included I always think of more extremist left views not just liberal. Sorta like a for sure safe space for people in the community plus everyone affected by the government. As in when I see an alt person I assume they have more or less the same views as me especially since the community a lot more now has been infiltrated by Nazis or "goth/alt maga" which is literally insane and just goes against everything alt stands for.
A lot of people often forget that, by definition, "alt" is more than emo or dark clothes.
people often take themselves and their subcultures dead seriously and often just become gatekeep-y about it, like the kind of people who go "if you shop at hot topic and listen to [insert popular band here] instead of [band the person likes that has like 5 listeners] you're not a REAL punk/emo/goth/whatever", like of course there's limits but like, not everyone has to be diehards, they can just like it or be more low-key about it
@Bakartridge gatekeeping is necessary in order to keep a community alive, not the gatekeeping that keeps newbies away (always help the newbies) but the gatekeeping to keep the people who are in for the aesthethic away. you don't have to be a diehard but u atleast have to care about it and show support for less known bands. You obviously can like mainstream artists and bands, everyone does like some mainstream music but if u dont go out of ur way to find new artists or atleast ask someone for recommendations and you don't go to local shows, is the person really in the subculture? (depends on the sub really but most r like this)
@Jadeckal exactly this, thank you![]()

i feel like good amount of people who recently became "alt" or wtv like during 2020 definitely made fun of alt people before it become mainstream and popular - as someone who has dealt with MANY people like this
i remember seeing a girl who made fun of me for dressing emo post on tiktok a while back about shes having a "weird girl prom" because her and her ugly ass bf are in a bug-print suit and dress its really infuriating icl
Saying that you can't be alt and buy fast fashion is stupid. All fashion is fast fashion unless you're thrifting real vintage, but even then, most stuff you get from thrift stores is fast fashion anyway. There are very few affordable, ethical brands out there that pay fair wages and use decent materials. If you buy from any major brand there is a 95% guarantee you are feeding into the system you claim to hate. Poor people deserve clothes. It's not their fault that under global capitalism, it is economically impossible to create high-quality clothes, pay a living wage to workers, and still only charge $10 for a shirt. If you aren't advocating for solutions to increase affordability, sustainability, and living wages for workers, then you're just virtue signaling. Talk about government regulation for mega corporations, subsidizing circular economies, and requiring people to be paid a a livable wage.
if you're in a certain alt subculture and ALL the interests u have about it are mainstream and you don't want to go atleast a little deeper you're a poser. It shows u don't care enough about it and are only in it for the aesthetic. And no you don't have to listen to a band with 5 monthly listeners thats a stupid statement
Examples:
No you're not a metalhead cause u ONLY like the big 4 of american thrash, iron maiden, black sabbath, tiktok famous bands and nu-metal (nu-metal is an attempt at commercializing metal and metal is a music genre against commercialization and against the norm therefore shouldnt be considered metal)
No you're not a punk cause u ONLY like pop-punk (not even real punk) and sex pistols
No you're not emo cause you ONLY like mcr and ptv (barely emo) and shitty pop punk (not even emo)
i feel like being "alt" isnt necessarily about subcultures (so you can be considered alt without belonging to one or more specific subcultures) but fits about the same countercultural qualifications, including divergent from the norm music tastes, fashions and political views... like you can be alt without necessarily fitting into boxes, i feel like that's allowed

gatekeeping is okay to some extent to make sure the subculture doesn't get watered down.

Hot take but we should start calling scenecore "kandicore" cuz in no way is it scene and they're mostly just SHEIN warriors
@xX_Fallen_4ngel_Xx well i mean scene is still scene but scene posers are kandicore
my take is that being alt is about the mindset and history, not just the fashion. because ppl think that if they wear alt clothes it automatically make them alt when it's not it's more than that. another thing too you can be alt and wear whatever you want it doesn't specifically have to be just 'dark clothes.' you can wear whatever you want and still be alt you don't have to fit into that stereotype. just be true to yourself and not what others think.
scenecore doesn't deserve the hate it gets. i'm not super alternative/into scene or emo or any of that side of it at least, but scenecore just looks like kids having fun with fashion. people need to accept that each generation has its own versions of alt styles. it kinda reminds me of the way goth fashion has changed since the 80s. idk
