I've never actually spoken to someone who's played a tales of game before (tales of vesperia, tales of berseria, tales of Xillia ect). It seems to be semi-niche as in its known in the genre but the chances of meeting someone who's played one is very low. Tales of Vesperia is my favorite game so i would be very happy to get to talk about it with someone

So far I've finished Phantasia Cross, Destiny DC, The Abyss, Innocence R, Hearts R, and I'm nearly done with Vesperia and Destiny PSX.
Vesperia is great! Tales of the Abyss is my favourite, I love it so much. It made me cry more than any other game. I love all of the characters and the story. I also like Destiny a lot, the story is nothing spectacular and the last third of the game is pretty bad but I love the characters enough to override that lol. I wonder whether Destiny 2's fanslation will ever release
@ILoveBirds i want to play abyss so bad but they still haven't ported it :( it seems amazing
@Toffee.moon It really is! There should be a remaster coming eventually since Bamco hinted to it. Its easy to emulate as well, although if you go that route I recommend to download the undub patch as in the english dub the skits aren't voiced (and the original voices are just imo better)
@ILoveBirds yeah, I'll probably play it if it gets a remaster, it looks good. I just wish they remastered the older games before the newer ones tbh
@Toffee.moon Me too, that's why I'm so excited for the Eternia remaster :)) I want to play the newer games eventually too but the older ones interest me more
only played Arise and it became my favorite "so bad its enjoyable" game. Although a friend of mine who loves the series swears to me that Arise is a one off mistake and the rest is good. I should really give the rest a shot sometime
@Nehiri arise was quite enjoyable in my opinion, i think that SOME of the writing is odd like when they didn't let rinwell hit almedrea even though its justified and the plan was to kill her anyway (not a fan of rinwell at all but she should have been allowed to kill her let's be fr). I think the combat was enjoyable, tales of games are usually different in that aspect but a lot of people hated how different it is. I much prefer it to tales of zesteria, if you do play them that's the one i least recommend, if you do play another game i would recommend Berseria since its definitely got the best story and its not too far in time. Do you know which game is your friends favourite?
I like Rinwell and honestly I loved every member of the main cast which was the sole reason why I kept playing because I just loved their banter. But the writing man... Every writing decision in the game pissed me off and the finale especially genuinely made me lose years off my life. Because like... I'm gonna write this all in black background and text so highlight it to see the spoilers. WHAT DO YOU MEAN ALPHEN JUST FORGIVES VHOLRAN AND LETS HIM GET AWAY WITH THE RENAS ALMA???? AND WE DIDN'T EVEN NEED THE RENAS ALMA TO SAVE THE WORLD??? WHAT THE HELL WAS THE POINT OF ALL OF IT!!!!
BOY lemme tell ya, there was just one straw needed to break the camel's back and that ending was a whole haybale being thrown at it. Genuinely felt so unsatisfying knowing all that happened. And I think my friend's favorite was Berseria.
And damn right it is!! It should be mandatory to make every automata fan play replicant too
@Nehiri yeah some of the in-game decisions were a bit odd, also the fact they got rid of the victory quotes is upsetting because they're such a cute touch. I also hate how "paired" the characters are in a way, i wish they interacted a little more outside of duo's; this is a criticism i have for a lot of media tbh, especially persona 5- a lot of the cast barely interact like we need more haru and yusuke interaction fr. Persona 5 was definitely a bit TOO protagonist central, not that i don't love the game but the character writing goes to hell after the main character arcs. We shouldn't need p5d to see characters apart of the same group talk to eachother. the dlc is honesty terrible- like Idk if you had played it but the fact they just leave that kid to go back into the world despite how DANGEROUS it is got on my nerves. Also the fact for some reason we didn't get to see Shionne say yes? Like i hate romance but with the way everything was set up, the proposal should have not been cut off, even if you know they get married. They should have adopted that kid bro.

The only one I've played was Berseria (and like 5 minutes of Zesteria but I remember really not liking that), I really liked Berseria's story, but not the gameplay as much.
That's one of the things I hear about Tales, a lot of people I know who like it says it suffers from Fire Emblem Syndrome, where either the gameplay's good but the story's not great, or vice versa, I guess that's my biggest worry about looking more into the series

@Black Market Stray Cat Zesteria definitely sucks- it has terrible story and the characters are MOSTLY insufferable so i wouldn't recommend. I can understand the game play could be weird, although i grew up with the series so it's kinda the standard for me. Game play wise, what did you dislike?

The gameplay was really mashy, to the point where I thought I was playing it wrong/bad for a good 10 hours, until I brought it up on Discord and two Tales fans in the server I was in went "Oh no, the game's just like that". I'm told this is apparently worse in Berseria compared to the others, though.

@Black Market Stray Cat yeah that's fair, i usually use Mage characters so it is usually just the same spell over and over again (especially in Vesperia since there's one that Just stuns every enemy which gets you more grade, also because they can't hit the characters). Its definitely less "free" for a lack of a better descriptive word. I think i did use velvet in Berseria because when i first played i was like 7 and didn't know i could change; i really hated the blue diamond addition because it ended up stunning velvet which was one of my biggest issues because a lot of battles were long due to that (rokurou kept stealing them). I think combat wise Xillia is the best to play. I can understand the lack of skill needed to fight can be an issue because there's really nothing to separate bad players from good players.

I have been playing them since syphonia on the gamecube, I think I own all but the newest one on PC. I think they are somewhat popular as far as JRPG's go, not as mainstream as final fantasy but that's okay.
i've tried a bunch of them, but i tend to bounce off because i am so bad at the combat xDDDD the ones i've played are tales of symphonia, tales of abyss, tales of vesperia, and tales of xillia ii. the one i really want to try and never have gotten around to is tales of destiny. my favorites are xillia ii (for characters) and abyss (in general). i intend to play abyss again soon, i just lost my save file because my memory card killed itself x_x i get really into the mood of playing that kind of game in november so i'm just counting down the days.. i think the stroy of abyss is just so interesting, i love the characters, etc etc etc i just love it :D

get a ps2 ~ the ps2 is great, it has tons of games, and its super easy to softmod nowadays. you just need either a certain line of thin model or a memory card someone flashed with free mcboot on a thin model (second method will ultimately be cheaper even though it sounds like laziness). i have 2 ps2s because i love them so much:D
